Again and for the fourth time during 1940, '93 has suffered the loss of a member. It is our sad duty to report that Judge Frederick N. Chandler died December 28, 1940 at his home in Andover, Mass. "Zac," while not too strong since his operations two years ago, had been regularly attending to his duties in court and at his office up to December 21 when he went to bed with a cold which developed into pneumonia. The funeral services were held December 30 at his home and interment was in the family lot at the beautiful West Parish Burial Ground. We, of the class of '93, remembering his strong, rugged character, outspoken common sense, and intellectual clear thinking during college days are in no way surprised at the success which "Zac" attained in his chosen profession and field; success, not only financial but what is still more important, success in acquiring the respect and friendship of his fellow citizens. We grieve at his passing and extend to Mrs. Chandler, who is bearing her burden bravely, our sincere sympathy. Of '93 attending the funeral were President Cox, Mr. and Mrs. George B. Dodge, Mr. and Mrs. George E. Greeley, Mrs. Charles B. Gordon and daughter Helen (Mrs. Allan Cate) and your Acting Secretary. (See Necrology.)

Word has been received from Mrs. Hunt that Sam was taken to the hospital December 4 for observation. Two operations were found necessary and the last one was performed December 26. He will be at the Phillips House, 265 Charles Street, Boston, Mass. until about the middle of January. Telephone information from his nurse indicates that he is doing well, although he has had a very hard time of it.

Your Acting Secretary found time in December to leave New England for a holiday visit with his 20-year-old granddaughter, Virginia Van Duesen and her mother and father at their home in Wilmette, Illinois. With Mrs. Aborn and her sister, we drove through the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia and over the West Virginia mountains. The route back took us over the wonderful new super-highway in Pennsylvania. Further winter activities include a proposed trip to Florida the latter part of February, and if any '93 men from the north are going to be in Florida temporarily at that time, they could drop me a line so that a get-together might be planned.

"Joe" Merrill in New York writes and says that he is still very much interested in electric heating elements and expects good results from his efforts in this direction. He is making his office headquarters with "Joe" Ford '95, at 300 Madison Avenue, New York City.

Secretary, 795 Memorial Drive, Cambridge, Mass.
