April 1941 THOMAS W. BRADEN JR.

I know a man in the Class oE 1940 who is in debt to Dartmouth College to the extent of two dollars and eighty cents.

We were at lunch one day last month when he furtively produced the bill from his wallet. It was dated, April, 1940, marked "for damages," and bore the usual imprint about paying before graduation or else. He swears he never paid it and he got his diploma without a hitch.

Somehow it gave the occasion an air of illicit excitement. We were just about to order champagne and drink from a slipper when we remembered that it was broad daylight and the sun was high in the sky.

By the time these lines are preserved for yourselves and your posterity you will know that Richard E. Glendinning the well known millinery expert and author in the ladies garment field has been named to write the 1940 Bulletin for the Alumni Fund.

I ought to warn you about Glendinning so that you will be prepared for anything he may do or say. Glendinning got his start by writing about Pixies for The Dartmouth. He could turn out a second column or a front page feature on Pixies in Baker Library any day in the week and usually did. They always began, "Those Pixies in Baker Library are at it again, and went on that way for whatever was needed to fill up the space, usually nine or ten inches or more.

Glendinning never explained what Pixies were. For that matter nothing in his copy could possibly be construed as having any meaning at all, and there were a great many people who didn't appreciate them. Baker Library was one, and its officers used to write complaining letters to that effect. President Hopkins himself once said, "I must say I do not quite get the point of those Pixie stories of Glendinning's." But on the whole Glendinning had quite a following of Pixie lovers including George Gitis and George Therrault who understand that sort of thing.

In one of The Dartmouth's periodic shakeups we had a policy against Pixie stories for awhile, and when we needed dull day space filler Glendinning had to write stories like "Baker Library Doing Extra-Fine Job, Critic Finds." This wounded his soul and we knew it but it didn't last for long.

One midnight we got a telegram from Ellsworth saying he was unavoidably detained at Rahars and would we please fill up his ten inches on the front page. So we got Glendinning out of bed and told him to write a feature and the next morning when we looked at the paper, there was a story beginning, "Those Pixies in Baker Library are at it again." After that the new policy just sort of slipped away.

I asked Glendinning if he were going to write about Pixies for the 1940 Bulletin and he said he only wrote about what he was thinking about and if he was thinking about Pixies he would write about them. So now you know.

Up in the backwoods country of Vermont, Bob O'Brien, Art Root, Page Smith. Jack Preiss, Bud Schlivek and A 1 Eiseman are still up to their necks in the Sharon Experiment.

Sometime last June they decided that one half of America's young men knew nothing whatsoever about the other half, that the C.C.C. camp was the right place to bring them together, and that bringing them together would pour concrete into the term, democracy. Their immediate purpose was to get the government to set up a new type of C.C.C. camp, consisting of both college and non-college men.

They started by working on farms, shovelling out barns, building roads and doing the chores for the Vermont farmers. They held meetings, won the support of Dorothy Thompson and Mrs. Roosevelt, and more important, of the farmers themselves. For a time they had the support of the government too, and a new camp was instituted on the basis they desired. By this time other men, from Harvard and from Dartmouth had joined them. Last month, under the prodding of several of Washington's more demagogic demagogues, the government did an about face, and right now the boys are once again almost wholly on their own.

Since they have already poured their money, their efforts and their futures into the plan (Art Root, for example, gave up a fellowship at Yale), this is nothing new to them and they are beginning the battle all over again.

They have had to compete with a great many obstacles. They have been called reds and fascists; they have had to temper the erratic though inspiring leadership of Prof. Rosenstock-Huessy; they have made some bad mistakes—such as the time they turned a Dorothy Thompson lecture in Webster Hall into a recruiting office for naive Dartmouth freshmen; they have had to argue with sincere people who believe in their goal but doubt that Americans can get to know each other through artificial means; and they have been somewhat disillusioned by attitudes of some of the Dartmouth faculty.

To the best of my knowledge however, nobody has denied that one half of America is in ignorance about the other half. Maybe 1940 has the solution.

After his wedding, Bill Hutchinson left for Florida and will return only as far as South Carolina where he has a job with Quaker Oats. There was a large crowd in the church and Hutch covered the distance between the door and the altar without so much as a hand being laid on him, though Cross and I restrained with difficulty an impulse to yell, "Go Hutch, Go!" ....Webster Whitney, who left Dartmouth in 1938 is now in the army, stationed at Governor's Island. .. .Tom Allen is working for Pratt and Whitney in Hartford. . . .Tom George says that on Saturday afternoons when nobody is watching he sails paper airplanes out of his office window high in a Fifth Avenue skyscraper. .. .Tenor Beezie Smallwood is at Maxwell Field, Montgomery, Alabama, midway in his ten week Army Air Corps training.... Ray Dau is in Chicago, training for the same thing Whizzer White's job with an Evanston bank involves a four hour day leaving him just enough time for basketball practice with the company team Fred Porter is working for Gulf Oil in New Jersey The army is getting Jack Townsend next mon th.

And now we come to the time for all good men. The Alumni Fund Drive is calling, and if you haven't heard from Breech, I am confident that you will.

According to our plans, 1940 is not going to go in much for impassioned oratory, red letter days, banner years or "How's it Joes!" Quietly and with a solemnity befitting our times, we will register the largest percentage of contributions of any first year class in Dartmouth history and let the credit go. And after 1940 it will probably never be said again that, "It is a large college, but the Alumni Fund doesn't show it."
