FEBRUARY 10th ushered in the first of a new series of bimonthly dinners which are to be held in various parts of the Los Angeles district in order to give more men a chance to attend regular meetings.
This initial gathering, held at the Beverly Hills Hotel, saw some 70 alumni turn out to disport themselves with 30 odd members of the Cornell alumni who joined us for dinner and a visual and verbal dissection of the famous "fifth down." Furb Haight 'si, host of the evening, broke the ice and saw to it that everyone got started on the right track.
Intimate glimpses of the evening included Vic Salinger 'oo furtively trying to lure some innocent Cornellian into a wager on the score of the movie version of the "pigskin classic"; Zack Jordan '2O and Ray Bennett 'l3 competing in some plain and fancy sideline coaching; individual cheering sections organized and patronized by their sponsors Hartley Caldwell '23 and Rudy Pacht '35; our president Frank Mc-Entee '39 rushing between the speakers table and the piano to give vent to his dual personality of toastmaster and musician.
We were glad to see that Constantine Tripolitis 'l6 could take time off from inspecting planes for the Navy and join us, as well as Jared Hatch 'O4 and Charlie Ryder '3l (CBS exec.). Nipper Knapp 'l2 blew in as a surprise package from the east as did Don Chapman '2B, who dropped in en route to, Honolulu. Bud Walls '3B, Wayne Schrodes '39 and John Bonter '4O, who are relatively new additions to our flock were in evidence to help swell the total.
The roll call for the entire group included: Vic Salinger 'OO, J. P. Hatch 'O4, Tubby Laton 'O6, John Hendon 'OB, Dick Merrill 'OB, Jim Norton 'OB, Max Bonter 'O9, Emil Erhard 'O9, Ed Martin 'O9, Eck Hiestand 'lO, Jerry Barnes 'll, Walter Gibson 'll, Ole Ahlswede 'l2, Sam Hobbs 'l2, Nipper Knapp 'l2, Ray Bennett 'l3, Leo Murphy 'l5, Bob Thieme 'l6, Constantine Tripolitis 'l6. The Tuesday Luncheons have been doing very well, with many new additions, including Howard Robison '29, Brad Peterson '37, Bill McMurtrie '3B and Vic Salinger 'OO. The guest of the month was our genial friend Charlie Milham, fresh from Dixie, who was passing through Southern California between cloudbursts.
We wish to give a vote of appreciation to Bob Morris '36, as compiler and author of an infant periodical (as yet unnamed) which is now going out regularly to" all members of the association. Two editions have already been mailed and are really loaded with news.
