CLUB NEWS IN Southern California has been rather slim in the last several months. The war has caused many members to shift their fields of endeavor into work connected with defense, and, as a result of these dislocations, the attendance at the Tuesday luncheons has become rather sporadic, although some of the old guard, including Leon Rothschild '24, Eck Hiestand '10, Furb Haight '21 and Murray Hawkins '19 are quite regular.

Recent months have seen the various branches of the service claim many of our younger men. Into the Army have gone Jack Kent '33, Leon Kent '35, Rudy Pacht '35, Steve Vafensi '40 and Art Funkhauser '40, while the Navy has lured Brad Peterson '37, Bob Archibald '38 and Fred Leopold '40.

On April 10th, the annual meeting of the association was held, attracting about fifty members, who dined, drank and participated vocally in an open forum discussion. The latter proved a popular innovation and someone remarked that it was the first annual meeting when anyone except the chairman of the nominating committee, the featured speaker and the club president could get in a word of their own. There were four men, each with some experience in their particular field, who gave a short talk and then threw the meeting open for questions and discussion. Topics and speakers were: Changes at Dartmouth to meet the war emergency—Walter Douglas '31, the work of an Air Raid Warden in Civilian Defense—Furb Haight '21, the workings of a Draft Board—Dick Merrill 'OB and the California State Guard—Jerry Barnes '11. These topics produced a lot of extemporaneous speeches and carried along for several hours. Officers for 1942-43, elected at this meeting, were Pres. Bob Morris '36, Ist V. P. Line Wilson '13, 2nd V. P. Russ Cotner '20, Sec. Bud Walls '38, Asst. Sec. Bill McMurtrie '38 and Treas. Keat Coffey '33.

Other members at the meeting included —Charlie Brock '88, Vic Salinger '00, Hugh Sanborn '02, Dr. A. L. Hill '04, F. J. Root 'O4, Jim Norton 'OB, Kid Richardson '08, Jack Glynn '09, Ole Ahlswede '12, B. W. Robie '12, Sam Hobbs '12, Ray Bennett '13, Bob Thieme '17, Don Graves '19, Zack Jordan '20, Ash Castle '24, Buck Jones '25, Red McCleery '25, Frank Appleton '26, Larry Bourne '26, Roscoe Guyot '27, Dick Robin '29, Frank Mc Entee '29, Dick Eberline '29, Howdie Robison '29, Lt. Jim Mitchell USA '30, Win Smoyer '32, Paul Cook '32, Ken Jacques '33, Brice Banks '34, Dave Teachout '34, Bill Gay '34, Carl Gram '37, Brad Peterson '37, Bob Frese '38, Dave Boyle '40, Larry Thompson '41, Jack Ahlswede '41. We welcome back Charlie Brock '88 after a long absence and greet new members Frank Appleton '26, Ken Jacques '33, and Dave Boyle '40, also visitor Dick Robin '29 from San Francisco and applicants for admission, Lee Abbott, George Glass and Carson Rasmussen.

We are, at this writing, all looking forward to our next meeting at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood when we will have Prof. Allen R. Foley from Hanover as our guest of honor.
