Sliver and Mrs. Hatch extend an invitation to the Class to have a second picnic at their home at 35 Pickwick Road, West Newton, Mass. The date is Saturday P.M., May 24, 1941. Those who attended the first picnic at their home last year report a most delightful time. Go out Commonwealth Avenue about one half mile beyond Newton City Hall, turn left on Fuller Street and keep on for a mile to Pickwick Road just before reaching the Brae Burn Country Club.
It is hoped that there will be a large attendance.
Work comes from Ike Maynard of 55 Canfield Avenue, West, Detroit, that he accompanied Mr. C. F. Kettering of General Motors to Hanover for the 1939 Commencement when Mr. Kettering received an honorary degree. Ike enjoyed the '05 Reunion last year. He visits the Granite State every summer. Within the last two years he has become a grandfather twice. His daughter gave birth to Edward A. Guest 111, who is now a little over two years old, and Ellen Elizabeth, who is six months old. The Class extends congratulations to you and yours, Ike.
Walter Lillard writes that Edwin Newdick, son of our late classmate Edwin Walter Newdick, who attended our Reunion last June, will enter Dartmouth in September. Walter reports that Edwin has done honor work at Tabor Academy, has edited the school paper, won his letter in football and played in the orchestra. A versatile young man who should make an excellent Dartmouth man.
TRAINING CRUISE Walter took ten of his boys on the Oriente for a training cruise to Cuba, during March. They had a week ashore, four days in Santiago and played basketball games there and in Havana. The Tabor boys have received an invitation from the Cubans to participate in a regatta in August of this year.
Since last July, Walter, who is still a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Reserves, has been doing part-time army work. He has been attached to the Massachusetts Adjutant General's office and has been active in planning and operating the Selective Service Program in Massachusetts. Walter is now State Coordinator for Education and visits all the colleges to interpret the program for their registrants who have been deferred until July 1, 1941. A fine and important service, Walter.
The sympathy of the Class is extended to Shirley Cunningham on the loss of his father, Richard Cunningham of 400 Worcester Street, Wellesley, Massachusetts, who died at the age of 86 on March 27, 1941. Mr. Cunningham was selectman and tax assessor in Wellesley for many years.
Harry G. Halleck's new residence is at 735 Cleveland Street, Gary, Indiana. His business address is 7309 Columbia Avenue. Harry is with the United States Housing Authority.
A welcome letter from Gib Fall records some very thoughtful observations, written from the standpoint of a thorough student of American History, about Oliver Wiswell, the recent book by Kenneth Roberts. Gib commends the review of this book, in a recent number of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE.
