Your secretary expresses his appreciation for the letters received and the many kind messages sent in response to his letter and the directory. His fondest hope is that the little book will bring together many of the class who have been out of touch with each other for many years.
Royal Parkinson's father, William D. Parkinson '78, has been secretary of his class for many years. The class notes of 1878 have led the list these many years. Your secretary and, I know, all secretaries read with regret and sorrow in the December issue that this would probably be the last time 1878 notes would appear. Mr. Parkinson has been an inspiration to all secretaries and to Dartmouth men every- where and we shall all suffer in the loss of his words of wisdom and good cheer. May we still, as he says, hear from 1878 from time to time.
Walter Nourse is going around with that proud and chesty look which gives him away. At long last Walter is a grandfather. On October 30, Walter's daughter, Dorothy, presented him with a grandson, Richard Nourse Voss. Mr. Voss is a graduate of Williamette University, and he did graduate work at California Tech. He is a research engineer in chemistry and employed by Cinecolor. Walter adds that he will be at reunion next year or bust.
Walt and Mrs. Conley are sailing February 27 on "one of Sliver's" boats for Havana, Canal Zone and Guatemala. These Conleys are the "travelingest" people I know. When I saw Walt in New York on December 17, he didn't look to me as though he needed a vacation but as though he could play fifty minutes of a football game.
Everett Cliishohn is still on the staff of the New Haven High. School, where he has taught for the last thirty-five years. Everett's youngest son is married and is a student at Dartmouth, living in Sachem Village. Everett has a cottage in Tuftonboro, N. H., on Lake Winnepesaukee, where he spends his summers and, as you could guess, fishing is his hobby. He visits Hanover several times a year so we hope to see him at reunion in '49.
Allen Graves has been practising medicine in Harlem, New York City, ever since his graduation from Dartmouth Medical School. He has done a wonderful work there. Allen attended the 1905-06 dinner December 17, and "Tub" asked him to tell us about his work. What he said made a tremendous impression on all of us. Allen has Jour daughters, three of whom are married, and one grandson, Allen Graves Tarver. The Tarvers are now in Tokyo, Japan. One daughter is a teacher in a New York Junior High School, one is a secretary in a newspaper office, and the third is a trained nurse.
This is the Alumni Fund issue of the MAGAZINE and I have asked "Sliver" for a statement to give the Class. I know something about the time and effort he puts into this work for the College and the Class, and I feel that we owe him a great debt of gratitude and sincere thanks for his untiring effort. Here is Sliver's message to us:
"By the time this appears in print the 1948 campaign will be almost upon us. From the report in this MAGAZINE you know that last year we collected a total of $3,993-50 as against our quota of $4,400.00. We finished last in our group. I hope we can better this in 1948 and we can with the help of all of you. I presume the usual percentage of you will answer my first appeal and come through promptly with a check. A slightly larger percentage will carefully file the first appeal and finally come through after receiving two or three other reminders. The balance, and I must say in all fairness this is a small minority, won't even reply to any letters. Last year our participation percentage was 78%, let's see if we can't make it 100% in 1948."
