Aviation Specialists
June 1941

Six OF THE SEVEN graduates of the Thayer School of Civil Engineering joined the United States Navy as Aviation Specialists when they received their engineering degrees on May 23. The seventh member would have accompanied his classmates but for the stumbling block of an eyesight test. The Dartmouth engineers will report for duty on June 7 and will have the rank of Ensigns. As Aviation Specialists they will assume engineering duties with the Naval air corps. The six men are Frederic A. Davidson Jr., New Rochelle, N. Y.; James B. Espy, Denver, Colo.; Frederick D. Estabrook, Florence, Mass.; Buford M. Hayden Jr., Flutchinson, Kan.; Willott A. Pitz, Manitowoc, Wis.; and James A. Thomas Jr., Scarsdale, N. Y. All of the men received A. B. degrees from Dartmouth last June, with the exception of Estabrook, who is a graduate of Massachusetts State College.

The high percentage of acceptances by the U. S. Navy is taken as strong backing for the Thayer School's policy., which is to require at least three years of collegiate liberal arts education before engineering studies are undertaken and to provide intensive instruction in classes purposely kept small.
