A DEFICIT OF 113,597.56 in its operations for the fiscal year 1941-42 is reported by the Dartmouth College Athletic Council. This is an improvement of $18,830 over the operating deficit of the previous year and is a smaller deficit by $1,766 than was anticipated when the budget was revised at the close of the football season.

Although football netted $16,000 less than original budget hopes, its total of $73,938.95 was an increase of $38,280 over the 1940 season. Gross football receipts were up more than $35,000 while expenses rose approximately $7,000.

Of the remaining sports, basketball came closest to posting a profit, having a deficit of only $452.43 after total expenses of $17,785. It bettered slightly its record showing of 1940-41 and improved its budget by $2,900. Cross-country, golf, soccer, squash, track, and several of the freshman sports also improved over their records of the previous year, while baseball, hockey, lacrosse, swimming and tennis all showed greater losses. Administrative expenses increased by $786, due chiefly to advance purchases of equipment and supplies.

The Athletic Council's reserve funds last May totaled approximately $28,000. The Trustees of the College, advised of the financial hazards of the intercollegiate program have authorized a continuation of complete activities for the time being.
