Tenney, whose active life was spent in China, himself a Mandarin of the Order of The Golden Dragon, used to say that the Chinese were a people of extraordinary stamina, the Anglo-Saxons of the East; that when they aroused themselves from the complacent lethargy in which their static civilization had wrapped them, as they surely would, the Western world would have to take notice; that awakened China would accept no second place in world affairs. It begins to look, does it not, as if Tenney knew what he was talking about?

Popular Astronomy for August '41, discussing "The Role of The Amateur in Variable Star Astronomy," says that while trained astronomers tell us why stars vary, they must depend upon amateurs for the facts as to how they vary; hence the gathering in 1911, at the instance of professionals, of a dozen or so amateur observers, since developed into The American Association of Variable Star Observers now numbering nearly 200, reporting every month thousands of observations. As one of the first to join the ranks the writer names Rev. T. C. H. Bouton, then of Hudson, N. H., now of St. Petersburg. Florida, who observes with a 7-inch telescope in a home-made observatory. Few months pass without the appearance of "B" in the column of published results. A recent number of Sky and Telescope, also reporting the annual meeting of the A.A.V.5.0., presents a picture of Bouton at his telescope, and honors him as still adding, at 85, to his record of over 25,000 observations.
