April 1942 JOHN D. GILCHRIST JR.

It is late Sunday afternoon, here in Washington, time for us to get ready to meet that old deadline. Mil McCarty has lent us his trusty old Underwood, we brought along a few clippings and letters when we came down the other night, and now we're seated in Mac's room at the University Club looking out at the ornatelycarved stone walls of the Russian Embassy next door wondering just what to tell you firstoff. Mac has gone back to his office of Asst. Chief, Press Section, Defense Savings Staff, Treasury Department, to work for a few hours and at the moment we're rather bored with doing nothing but resting our eyes for another eyesight test tomorrow.

As to the news: well, there's the usual assortment of changes in addresses, another baby, another engagement, some more of us joining the services, a word or two about Sellmer plus those two pictures we promised you, some definite news about Halvorsen, who is in Libya, it turns out, instead of being in Europe, and one or two other items, all of which we'll get to on another page.

But right now our thoughts are not concerned with such of the usual items as it is our habit to set down here from time to time. Rather our thoughts are on a tall, ruggedly slender, determined young of ours. We remember playing freshman football with him, going across the campus matching our steps with his lengthy stride, seeing him coming up West Wheelock Street from the Phi Gam House with DonHagerman, Sel Hannah, Bill Moran and the rest, and later he was up in front with the other tall lads as we filed under the elms and up the hill into the Bema on Commencement Day. Then he joined the service, was commissioned back in 1938, and we heard from him as he was moved around from one air station to another. About a year or so ago he wrote us from down in South Carolina where he was on duty at the Charleston Naval Station, The people down here, Gilly, are like the Chinese: they live on rice and worship their ancestors," and then last fall he brought his bride up to Hanover for a football week-end, and the few years that have passed fell very graciously into place as some of us sat and talked of the undergraduate days. These thoughts and a good many others come into our mind as we learn that Carl Fischer is the first of us to go in this war. He gave his life in the faithful performance of his duty while on flight patrol off the shores of Hawaii; doing his duty, as all of us who knew him knew he would do it. We had great confidence in Carl Fischer; we still have.

WITH AND WITHOUT BEARD.

One of the accompanying pictures, the one without the beard, shows Bob Sellmer with his R.A.F. Wings on his breast, looking becomingly slender, handsome, and debonair as becomes his present station. The other, be-mustached and bearded, looking like something out of T. E. Lawrence's Seven Pillars, is in the uniform of the French Foreign Legion. Our once pudgy, lethargic class funny-man is the glamorous one on the right, his companion being the American with whom Bob teamed up after he was demobilized from the Legion following the fall of France. Latest word from Bob is that he is in very good health, received his wings several months ago, and is now busy flying R.A.F. fighter planes over the English Channel.

We lack confirmation of our earlier report that Dick Halvorsen was flying R.A.F. bombers on the Russian front, but the latest word.... which comes to us via about four hands, so to speak, having originated with actress Constance Cummings in London, .... is that Dick is at present in Libya.

OFF TO THE MIDDLE EAST. . . . We are advised by the New York office of the American Field Service that BillRiegelman has been accepted as a volunteer and has gone to join those already in service in the Middle East; that he gave up the chance of a job with O.P.M. because he feels that he "doesn't want to be pushing a pencil in these times," and that among other things Bill is the grandnephew of Mr. Henry Morgenthau, former ambassador to Turkey.

AND CLOSER TO HOME. . . . Ensign Robert K. Hage, U.S.N.R is now stationed down in Charleston, S. C Ed Freeman, studying at the Naval Reserve School, may be reached at Bancroft Hall, U.S.N.A., Annapolis, Md. . . . .Lt. Clifford W. Mills, at 32 Burncoat St., Worcester, Mass Ensign Adolp L. Siegener at 1152 Glorietta, Coronado, California WilliamL. Krieg is now at the American Consulate, Lagos, Nigeria Lt. Harold B. Orenstein resides at 10505 69th Ave., Forest Hills, L. I Captain Tisheng Yen has moved from Washington to New York City and Ralph Lazarus, with O.P.A. in Washington, lives at 5804 Cedar Parkway, Chevy Chase, Md.

ALTARATIONS. ... We are informed of the recent announcement of the engagement of Al Keenan and Katherine Calder Lee, daughter of Commander and Mrs. Robert C. Lee, of Brooklyn and Lee Farms, Far Hills, N. J. Al's affianced attended Packer Collegiate Institute and William & Mary, and is a member of the Jr. League.

BRING LIFE. . .. A diminutive copy of Life magazine, titled LifeComes to the Wachtels, February 14, 1942, details the arrival of Perry's second daughter Robin Wendy, now home with parents at 3010 Valentine (very appropriate address) Ave., Bronx, N. Y.

CLASS AGENT SHUFFLE. ... Ted Huck has been chosen by your Executive Committee to replace Ensign Bob Hage as Chief ofStaff in the coming campaign. It is our hope that everyone will go all out in aiding the College this year. Do what you can.

WHIRLIGIG. ... The March issue of Harper's contains an article "A Motorist to the Engineers" authored by D. A.Saunders That pigeon on the window ledge of the Russian Embassy is starting to bed-down for the night, and we're going to emulate him very shortly. See you in uniform.
