Clarence Dunbar and "Buster" Brown are the two young members of the Class now in War service. Clarence is a Lt. Colonel stationed at Camp Sutton, North Carolina where he is the camp surgeon and commanding officer at the Station Hospital. He also has a branch hospital at Charlotte. "Buster" Brown is a Captain in the Army Air Corps. He was stationed at Miami Beach for a six weeks' course and lived at the Roney Plaza at $1.00 a day, (if you happen to be going there on your own and not at Government expense, you pay $35.00 a day). "Buster" has now completed his training and is starting out in active service. We are forbidden to give details, but where he is now stationed it is possible for him to have his wife and two children join him. "Buster wants to be remembered to everyone and to say that Army life is fine even for an old fellow."

Everett E. Bachelder died Tuesday, July 20, at his home after an illness of several months.

Art Sporborg, who is president of the Real Estate Board at Miami, wants me to let anyone in the Class know that he is glad to welcome them when they arrive at Miami Beach. He and "Buster" Brown had a fine time together and maybe somebody else in the Class may find they are assigned to this district before the War is over.

Bill Patterson and his wife were caught in Manila when it was captured and they are listed by the Japanese as prisoners of War. Bill and his wife were in the States last year to enter their daughter at Stanford and then returned to Manila. In view of the fact that Bill has always been a good contributor to the Alumni Fund, Harold Prescott got busy and collected donations from the Class so that this year Bill is listed as having given $65 to the Alumni Fund. This speaks well for Harold's efforts and the thoughtfulness of the class members.

Merrill Follansbee, who is in the real estate business at Brentwood Heights, Los Angeles, reports that his oldest son is the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Corning, California; his second son is in the Navy and his daughter is a junior at the University, while Merrill is an air raid warden in his own right.

ENGAGEMENT

The society page of the Boston Herald carried a notice that Dr. and Mrs. Benjamin Burpee announce the engagement of their daughter Mary Elizabeth to Dr. Robert Nelson Lord, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Lord of Plattsburg, New York. They plan to be married this fall.

I have to announce two marriages in my family—my son Richard was married on April 4 to Ottilie Jeanne Marquard and they are at present residing in Manchester, Mass. My other son, Henry, was married to Evelyn Rudhart of Langhorne, Pa., on May 29 and they are at present living in Detroit, Mich.

Freddie Carroll also had some announcements. Their daughter Marion Elizabeth is engaged to Mr. Florin J. Hailer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Florin J. Hailer of Newton. His son, Robert Carroll, who is an Ensign in the Navy, was recently married to Miss Dorothy Mulhern, daughter of former state Senator Joseph J. Mulhern. Miss Mulhern flew to San Francisco to marry Robert on one of his short leaves-of-absence from the Navy.

Curt Sheldon, who has been City Treasurer in New Britain, Conn, since 1920 has just been reelected without opposition for another two-year term.

I am glad to have received a letter from Alb ert Hill who was in the ministery but has now retired and is living at 158 Brace Road, West Hartford, Conn. Even though he has retired, he is doing some writing for the newspapers.

I am sorry to report that George Goodwin, who is also retired from the ministery and located at Dade City, Florida, has had three strokes in the past four years.

I had a very pleasant visit from Nate Howland the other day. He keeps me informed on the (censored) situation and any time any of you have an opportunity to contact him in New York, you will find his viewpoint very interesting because of his many (censored) connections. He is located at 40 Exchange Place where he is a partner in the firm of Bull, Wheaton Company.
