It is most heartening the way John Eckstorm keeps up his interest in Dartmouth and '98, though unable to attend a reunion or visit Dartmouth.
Recently the Secretary read an account of a football game played between the University of Pennsylvania and Dartmouth during our college days. In that game, classmate Harrison Nichols did some outstanding work as tackle, breaking through at a critical time and tackling the man with the ball. I always thought Nichols had the inherent ability to develop into a first class tackle in football, or an outstanding pitcher, catcher, or first baseman in baseball.
Pres. Joe Bartlett writes, "All the young men have gone to war and the old men are now acting as senior partners and office boys at the same time. They are better at being senior partners."
Ted Leggett writes of a marvellous month's vacation spent by Mrs. Leggett and himself at the Forest Lake Club up in the mountains at Hawley, Pa. Deer, wildcats, black bass, trout, cool breezes, and a sporty golf course all helped to while away the time. Ted was a "triple threat" in college days, with his gay neckties, rosy cheeks and social graces. He is a "triple threat" now with his three daughters, three sons-in-laws and three grandsons.
Fred Lord writes, "Our boys are heart and soul in the affairs of this country, and their reasons for not attending a meeting at this time are really due to the fact that even '98 and its reunion has to take a back seat, when the U. S. welfare is in question." Seth Pope is busy in volunteer defense work and his two nephews have both won their commissions and are overseas.
Bob Peck has purchased a new place of residence at 173 Magee Ave., Mill Valley, Calif., ten miles north of San Francisco as one drives north over the Golden Gate Bridge. The house is near the eastern slope of Mt. Tamalpais. Good luck to genial Bob and his new bride!
The Secretary enjoyed a few minutes visit with Pope and Mrs. Pope on his way down to Wellfleet with Mrs. Patey. One day Ev Snow and Ruth and their son-inlaw, Milton Leonard, with his bride, Elizabeth Snow, dropped in for a delightful hour. Ev and Ruth are busy with church work at Stratham, N. H., this summer, for the church has decided to close for the month of February, the coming winter.
Richard Patey is completing his flying course in North Carolina; Robert Patey is in his final year at Harvard Medical School and he and his entire class are now inducted into the service and will join a medical unit on completion of the course.
