AT A BELATED OPENING in the middle of August, the old Casque & Gauntlet House on the corner came to life as the new Dartmouth Hostess House, designed to provide a place where all members of the undergraduate College—Navy, Marine, Army, and civilian—might entertain their families, dates, and friends. In charge of the new social center is Mrs. James J. Broderick, of Keene, New Hampshire, whose son, Jim Broderick '45, is stationed here in the Unit.
Under the supervision of Mrs. Broderick. the newly decorated and refurnished house is proving one of the most popular spots in Hanover. At the direction of the College, the building, which used to house members of the senior society, was completely repapered and painted, and furniture was donated by the fraternities which closed down at the end of the intersession.
On the main floor there is a large room in the rear for dancing and five smaller sitting rooms decorated with an eye to comfort and a homelike atmosphere. Downstairs a game room offers other recreational facilities. The second floor houses a powder room, Mrs. Broderick's quarters, and girls' dormitory facilities, which are being used for the first time the weekend of October 2, on the occasion of the Quarter Deck Hop, first all-college dance of the year.
The Hostess House is open every afternoon and evening and all day on Saturday and Sunday. As no stags are allowed, the new house is supplementary to the Robinson Hall recreation center which is for men only.
