From Hank Merrill, "Have just been transferred. My new address is % Panagra, Santiago, Chile. We like it fine because it resembles New Hampshire with lots of skiing, fishing, riding, as well as gas and tea rationing. Expect I'll have some news to pass on soon, as I am starting on a couple of trips." .... Dick Durrance has a new address, 8056 30th N.E., Seattle, Wash. Dick is a photographer with Boeing Aircraft From Bill Goodman's wife comes news of a son, Louis Wolf Goodman, born on December 6, 1942 Paul Jones, now a lieut. (j.g.) sports the extra half-stripe on his Navy blues Cleve Spillers is now Post Signal Officer and Cryptographic Security Officer at McClellan Field, Ohio. His mother (our news source) extends an invitation to all '39ers, in behalf of Cleve, to drop in at 1328 D St., Sacramento, if in the vicinity.
From "What the hum" Johnny Page we received the following: Keith Anderson is practicing law in New York City; Art Bright is teaching at and Phil Dresslar, finished with Harvard Business School, is now with a law firm in Chicago Through Mrs. A 1 Steffen we are able at last to catch up on Al's career. He is the father of Scotty and Marcia Steffen, age two and five years, which might be enough of a biography in itself. Since October 1942 he has been at Camp Croft, S.C. with the army. Within a few months' time he expects to head toward Ft. Benning for an OCS course. Present address, 29th Inf., Cos. 8., Camp Croft, S. C.
.... Lt. Bruce Learned, Second Service Command, Tactical School, Hackettstown, was the principle speaker at the Kiwanis Club in Sussex, N. T. Reports have it that he was putting a few draftees straight concerning their new professions Ted Bourn received his wings and second lieutenant bars in the Army Air Corps early in January Dick Dunham received his commission as a Navy Ensign and the wings of a Navy pilot, at Jacksonville, Fla. late in January.
Bob Gibson was home on leave over Christmas. Gibby hit the print in the Pioneer-Press, St. Paul, Minn, under the heading, "Flier on Furlough." The article mentions that Gib has seen service at Pearl Harbor, Java, and the Aleutians. .... The Sunday Boston Post carried a feature story on the "diary of a US Navy Pilot." On December 27th a certain lieutenant mentioned the following: "Had quite a talk with Bob MacLeod today. He's a fighter pilot (U.S.M.C.) and seems quite a nice fellow. He came out of the Midway battle with several victories over Japanese aircraft." Incidentally Bill Webster, stopping over in Washington after his recent trip to Honolulu, mentioned seeing Mac out in sunny Calif, looking in fine fettle.
January 23rd, the Dartmouth Club of Washington held a smoker at the Hotel Willard. There were lots of '39ers present including plump Ed Searles, first Lieut., U.S.A., stationed at Ft. Washington, M. D., as a member of the staff & faculty of the Ad'j Gen'l School; Baxter Prescott, resplendent in a "tight-fitting" '39 blazer, and with the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co.; Baxter's roommate, First Lieut. Rodge Harrison, in the "can't-tell-you" division of the Army Signal Corps, and stationed in Washington; Jovial Boots Hoskinson, Captain in the Army and stationed at the Quartermaster General's Office in Washington, where he has been throughout the war and before. Boots is living at home but you can never tell just when he'll be moving out of town; Lieut, (j.g.) Johnny Mitchell, toiling in the VCNO office in Washington, and aiming for a good sniff of sea air; ... . Bill Risley, a proud father of a year and a half daughter, and connected with the Eastern Airlines; Robb DeGrafF, Ensign, holding down a very responsible berth at the Bureau of Ordnance, Washington; and Dune Farr doing the same as Robb, at Buord, and adding his bit at the smoker by leading the singing. .... Your acting-secretary was also on hand at the smoker, and can be found currently at the Fire Control School, Navy Yard, Washington.
Some choice bits of news passed on includes Lt. (j.g.) Bill Mason, instructor at Jacksonville Air Station, who is said to have put Buck Barvoets through his paces; Bruce Gillie, due for the Navy air training in Jacksonville in February, after a stay at Squantum, Mass.; Hank Mills operating from London as a member of the American Air Forces and_ the R.A.F. Eagle Squadron; Georgie Hanna receiving his commission at Ft. Monmouth, N. J. after a very mysterious trip around the country Gordon P. King, ensign USNR is re- ported in training at Harvard.
DOWN THE AISLE
As of January 23rd, Beatrice Ritchie, brother of '39er Ken, has born the name of Mrs. John C. Haartz Jr. The newlyweds' address is 2 Claflin Rd., Brookline, Mass From the Vermont Clinic, under "Sorority Notes," was the following, "Jane Allen '41 passed chocolates at the sorority meeting Monday night (Jan. 5) to announce her engagement to Richard Hadley, attending Vermont Med ical College." .... Frank Perry is engaged to Elfrieda Piepenstock of Providence, R. I.
Whitey Isbrandtsen announced his engagement to Miss Evelyn Kelley on January 25th. Whitey is now a cadet in the merchant marine attached to the Armv Transport Service Eliot Reynolds married Lieut. Alberta Holdsworth, WAAC, Dec. 19th. This ought to clear up any question on Army and Navy cooperation Bird-Dog White started out the New Year with a wife, Miss Elaine Emerson. Hank played a major part in a double ceremony.
Captain Hank Welton, USMC, announced his engagement to Miss Avis Carol Malcolm late in December. Hank is stationed at New River, N. C. Fred Upton is engaged to Jean Evelyn of Sewickley, Pa. The announcement was made January 24th.
On December 26th Miss Jean Harrison became the wife of Ensign Bob Schill. The marriage was performed in Westfield, N. J Wyman Vaughan became engaged to Hope Brutschy on January 26th. Miss Brutschy graduated from Smith in 1940. Wyman is now doing advanced chemistry at Harvard.
WRITER OF THE MONTH
Honors for writer of the month go to Les Chase for the second time within six months. Following is his "newsy'] letter.
For about eight days your correspondent had the company of both Ted Johnson and Chet Wiggin here at New River. But Chet left recently on a "hunting trip"; now T.K. and I remain in the same battalion at present.
Last reports from Quantico had Paul Winship up there nearly half way through the AC Course. And from Washington I hear Bill Mulkie is now a sergeant in our corps, stationed I believe at Quantico.
Called Bob Winton when in Boston around Christmas after a few days' liberty before reporting here. I was advised at the time of calling that Bob had left for Naval Training in New York City.
I hear from George "Montie" Gray occasionally, and he is stationed somewhere in Africa with the U. S. Army, as an ordnance man. The censor did not delete Gray's mention of having seen both the Sphinx and Cairo recently.
And lastly, from a man who has been out of our class picture for a while and for obvious reasons. An officially censored Christmas card reached me in the nick of time from Ace . Bailey who wrote that he had been in Curacao, N.W.I, for ten months, and expected six more. He is employed by the Raymond Concrete Pile Co., % C.P.1.M., Curacao, N.W.I. Incidentally, Dick, Ace can be reached at this address and would certainly be glad to hear from, or see any of the '39ers. Along about July Ist, 1943 Ace will have completed his engineering work there and intends returning to. U.S.A. to join the Navy.
