In line with a charge from our president, we journeyed to Hanover in February to effect a bit of research preparatory to assembling a "32 Year Report" to the Class. All work and no play makes Jackson a dull boy, so we shall confess to mixing some pleasure in good measure in with our chores; such things as viewing two swimming meets, two tracks meets, and a basketball game. An interesting footnote to these pleasures: Dartmouth won all of these contests except the varsity swimming against Princeton. And some say this was due to the absence of our free-style ace who suffered a pre-meet ankle sprain while tobogganing with his young lady on a precarnival warm-up. But the point is, Hanover affords a secretary all sorts of news tidbits. F'rinstance, we wined and dined with Bob and Evie Kaiser, and had a few words with their off-spring, Carole Jo, Robin, and Dave, the scourge of the bantam hockey league in town. Bob's oldest, Mike, lives on the campus as a Dartmouth student, so he did not grace the scene. And talking about issue, we dropped in at the Psi U house and had a few words with Pete Webster, the senior son of Bill Webster. This also yielded a reunion with Web's son number two, Tom, and his pretty wife Sally, who were up for a posthoneymoon visit. Tom is presently at UConn, after a four-year hitch in the U. S. Air Corps.

Then there was Dartmouth's star center- fielder. Tom Hanna, whom we caught at breakfast with his parents, George and Shirley. Seems that the Hanna seniors were in Woodstock for the weekend with Jack and Lillian Cumming for some pure relaxation. The brunch conversation swerved for a moment to the comments I had made in this column a few months back. Remember when I talked about "trivia" in conjunction with a charge made in the classnotes of a much younger class? Well, Shirley agreed that this is part of the charm of alumni notes, and promptly offered a bit of "hearsay" right on the spot. Seems that her brother had run into Ed Searles while supporting his daughter at a Parents' weekend at St. Mary's-in-the- Mountain, a prep school in Littleton, N. H. We shall not guess as to when there has been an item on Ed on these pages, because we rarely hear from out Toledo way. It is good to know he is well, and makes it east on occasion. Then there was the item on Betsy Wyman, Shirley reported that Lillian Cumming had run into her in an elevator at Bonwit's in Boston, ton. That tells the girls something! What if I'd said Filene's basement? Trivia indeed!!!!

But before we leave the Hanover scene, We recently learned that Lou Highmark Was selected to talk to the freshman class over the parents' weekend in late February. He was on hand with his freshman son Dave, who by-the-by has been tagged by Tony Lupien as a "pro prospect." Dave is a pitcher by trade, but rumor hath it that Lupien is making a first baseman out of him to take advantage of his power at the plate.

And since we are big in this column on the youth, let's report that Allen Thurm, younger son of father Sam, has just earned his M.A. from UCLA. Older son Andy (Dartmouth '65) is market research manager of "Business Week."

In answer to a postcard dispatched to Charlie Neer, we learn that his change of address (across the street) reflects only a move into a new office building at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. At present Charlie is Professor of Clinical Orthopedic Surgery at Columbia University, and a member of the twelve-man American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. His fourteen-year-old twin daughters and wife opt for figure skating, tennis, and horses, which keeps the family busy when Charlie has the time.

As you may have noticed in a recent issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, Zeke Hill was saluted by the College as "an artistic historian who writes to illuminate and not to impress." He thus received the Alumni Award, one of the more coveted honors granted by the College. We would remind you that Ed Oppenheim was similarly honored last year. '39 is stepping out!

It is with regret that we place the death of John Gauntlett's father into the record. He was 88 at the time of death, which apparently took place on January 16 of this year.

Before moving into the list of address changes, we have a brief "editorial" comment to impart. Any secretary worth his salt strives to present the broadest coverage he can in compiling monthly notes. We know of many who have been criticized for reporting only a handful of familiar names, to the point where readers get the idea that an "unholy" clique is abroad which by intent consumes the exclusive attention of the reporter. Don't believe it! A secretary is limited to where he can dredge up the news, and it so happens that some men are better correspondents than others. If this sounds like a request for more information from about the country, we'll have to plead guilty. We would like to write about YOU! Drop us a line.
