"I never thought this would happen," said Alfie McGrath during the reception following his marriage to Barbara Nevell, which took place in the Rectory of St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York on Washington's birthday. The bride and groom visited Hanover and Lake Placid on their honeymoon and are now living at Norfolk, where Al's squadron is based.
Also at Norfolk are Bill Jessup, who was graduated from Quonset in February and Lieut, (j.g.) Joe Guilfoy who reported there for duty with the "Sea-Bees." Back at the time of our 10th reunion, Joe was a senior resident engineer for the New Hampshire Highway department and more recently he was assistant superintendent of the E. J. Rappoli Cos., at Wilmington, Delaware.
From the Marana Basic Flying School at Tuscon, Arizona, First Lieutenant Joe Hancort wrote Charlie Raymond:
I enclose my three bucks due. I look forward to the ALUMNI MAGAZINE every month and hope to see some '3O lads soon. Since leaving home I've been with the Technical Training Command at Miami Beach, thence to the Flying Training Command, first at Santa Ana, Calif., and now here at Marana. Just a 5500 mile trek! Lots of work here, but a great gang, and I'm very keen about it. Margaret is here with me and we have rented a house in Tuscon. It's a swell cow town and a nice spot to live. Only 35 miles to the base and I commute by car each day." According to an article under his picture in the Bridgeport POST, Joe is a military instructor at Marana.
Charlie Raymond says that only 280 of you out of 440 graduates have paid the dues to date. He also sent us the list of Thirtymen who attended the Boston Alumni Association's annual dinner, to wit: McFarland, Ela, Bernhardt, King, Flanders, Ryder, Herb Chase, Marsters, Dickerson, Butterworth and Raymond.
Si Chandler just missed the dinner as he left a few days before to attend the P.C. training center at Miami, following which he goes on sea duty. Margo went South with him for the two months he will be there.
Earl Seldon, lieut. (j.g.), is now at Quonset Point for his indoctrination training, and A 1 Dickerson says that Apprenticeseaman Colly Young is getting his indoctrination at Hanover, in the Navy V-n course, after which he will be commissioned as a lieutenant. A 1 also told us that Win Durgin was in Hanover for the winter sports meet as coach of the Bates College ski team.
Lieutenant (j-g-) Scott Vanderbeck doesn't get indoctrinated, for he has a specialist rating in the supply corps and is stationed at the Naval Armed Guard Center in Brooklyn.
Both Tom Donovan and Eb Blake are at Camp Croft, S. C.
Betsy Raube has added more lustre, and lustiness, to the Ave Raube's new home at 3A Beechspring Drive in Summit, N. J. Her advent occurred February 23.
George Lord claims he hasn't much news, as "those of us who are slated to remain in Hanover for the time being are having our noses kept pretty close to the medical grindstone." He might have added close to the thermometers, too, on the day it reached fifty degrees below zero, shortly after Lincoln's birthday.
From Frank Tragle: "On December 7 I joined the Washington Bureau of the Associated Press, and what with living conditions being what they are down here, I have been busy getting the wife and children settled. But, in my opinion, being down here at this time is worth all the inconvenience The ALUMNI MAGAZINE has caught up with me, and I, in consequence, am catching up with the activities of the class. At the rate the boys are getting commissions, it looks as though Eisenhower is going to have a tough pull holding on to his command."
Exemplifying Frank's prophetic wisdom, Fran Horn and Les Godwin have recently been promoted to the rank of captain. Fran is in the Adjutant General's office in Washington, and Les is in the Army Air Corps.
George Allen's wedding was recorded last month, and now we have a new address for him, indicating that he is a Naval lieutenant at the New London Navy Hospital.
As most of you know, when an alumnus enters the service it would be impossible for the Alumni Records Office to keep track of his numerous changes of address, aside from the fact that the shortage of aluminum for new address plates prevents the College from making a new plate every time his address changes. The policy, then, for the duration is to send all class and college mail to service men's home addresses for forwarding. However, Lieutenant Paul Duback is in Nashville, Lieutenant Jim Cullyford has a Dallas address, while Lieutenant Joe Placak of the Navy still has a Cleveland address. Other new addresses are: Howie Heimbach, 1130 Bancroft Parkway, Wilmington, Del.; Henry Kleppe, Fairmount Ave. Morristown, N. J.; Red Telling, inspector for the Mc junkin Supply Cos., of Charleston, W. Va.; and Howie Eldredge on Bodfish Ave., Wareham, Mass. Shouldn't that be "Codfish Ave.," Howie?
