The Ides of March are upon us. It's a beautiful Sunday afternoon here in New York City, and as I sit here in my room looking down the avenue; to where it breaks around the New York Central Building at 45th Street, all I can see is a pre-Easter parade, all the gentry out in their finery. And another sure sign of March is spread all over the front page of HeraldTrib sport page "Dartmouth virtually clinches sixth hoop title by trouncing Princeton" and "Dartmouth's Don Burnham Upsets Frank Dixon in IC4A mile." Ah yes, spring is here and it's a lovely day, even in New York.
And it has been a lovely month, too, albeit a little cold and damp at times. JimFarley who has arrived at V-7 training uptown town says that Reed Griffith, Dick Remsen, and Jim O'Mara are with him on Morningside Heights and Ensigns Ad Winship and Rusty Hartranft instructing the Johnny Come-Latelies. Farl also sends forth that Matt Rapf is at V-7 Northwestern, EdRasmussen is a corporal instructing in aerial photography at Lowery Field, BobDewey and Pete Peterson are at Norfolk, and Don Egan is with the War Department in Washington. Ensign Joe Palamountain, on a yellow sheet which always was indicative of his type of journalism, writes from Hanover while on a six days leave from his station at Norfolk. Joe says BillMitchell, a part of some fightin' unit, was in on the African show; Joe also complains that there were women in the press box at the Columbia basketball game.
O/C Bud Dutton, who was unfortunate. enough to get tied up with an engineering outfit, AUS, sounds ofF from Fort Belvoir, Va. Full of news, Dud notes that Johnny dela Montagne, Harry Bond, and Jim Barr of the ski troops have arrived in Georgia for OCS; that Bate Ewart, Air Corps lieutenant, is now at Wilmington; that dela Montagne married Phoebe from Wyoming; that Art Cox is with Bob Lang's pressure group in Washington; that George Brickelmaier has retreated to be drafted; that Henri Bohle has been waiting the pleasure of Uncle Sam and hoping for Signal Corps; that Buck Strader is training colored engineers at Ft. Belvoir; that Elly Dressner has been commissioned in the engineers; that Dick Thompson is married and a papa living in Washington; that Jim Boggs is a Ist lieutenant in the Engineers. Dutch Schaefer writes that a good old Dartmouth get together was held in San Antonio recently and that Mike deSherbinin has left for further training in the Air Corps at Pine Bluff, Ark. Black JackCorwith, from Boston, says that he and Ted Arico took in the Harvard hockey and basketball games in Boston and then went out and helped JohnnyLuetters fiancee get out wedding announcements of their marriage which is scheduled for March 20; also that Dick Burns, commission and all, is stationed in Boston.
Ensign Em Rice, of the Coast Guard out of Sandwich, Mass., yearning for Sub Chasing. Says he saw a lot of Ensigns Jay Harris and Ed Self in school at New London and Sid Bull, now of Desert Center, Cal., occasionally on week-ends. T/sth Jack Witter, at Army Finance School, Wake Forest, N. C., finding army life much different than Hanover and Hartford, but getting along fine. Pvt. Bob Encherman off to OCS at Camp Davis from McDill Field training relays that Milt Williams is in the Air Transport Command overseas, Ed Fine is in the Technical Branch of the AAF in Harrisburg, Pa., and that Bob himself has been in the S-2 section at McDill Field. Jack'Harriman writes from Buffalo of brother Tom's marriage to Eleanor Levet, of White Plains, on January 30th (Tom is at MIT in aeronautical engineering), that Reed Griffith and Ad Winship were in on the wedding with Ad promising to relieve Reed of some weight when Reed reports to V-7, and that East Birkett is a Shavetail in the Coast Artillery. Then on the eve of leaving for Florida and the Air Corps Jack carded in from Buffalo of his own engagement to Barbara Brunmark of Beverley Hills, Cal., and Vassar.
Lieut. Bob Taylor, our own, announces his commissioning in the QMC, tells of Lt. Ken Jones studying Air Corps Communications at Harvard, Pres Reynolds at Tufts Med, Lt. Dave Allen fresh out of Infantry OCS and headed for Texas, and BillRussell a V-7 boy at Northwestern. Lt. Cadet Don Gates from the far north of Minnesota says that he's glad that a trip south is in store. Adds that he kicked around with Scotty Matthews and Art Sale at North Carolina Pre-Flight and since hitting Minneapolis has seen Brad Bowman,Cliff Roberts, and Bill Pinney (all of whom went to Corpus Christie), Dick Fisher who went to Miami, and Johnny Brooks, a V-7 Ensign also in Florida. Don says that he can remember the time when winter was a source of beauty and joy, but not in an open cockpit in Minnesota. And Ensign Bud Burgess writes to Peter Miller of his marriage in January, and notes that he has seen a lot of Bud Pogue, Gordie Brown, and Bill Harris around Washington. And finally, a card from Corporal Walter Haley, who is at Fort Myer, Va.
