The summer of 1940. War continues to spread in Europe with the fall of France in June and the Nazi build-up of power before the Battle of Britain, which will start in the fall. On the home front many of us had pleasant summers, at work or at play. I had both I was caddymaster at a local golf club. For me there are fond memories of 1940. Where were you and what were you doing? Fifty years ago.
It seems like an eternity since we last met in this space. Since I signed off in March, many of our classmates have enjoyed regional reunions on the east and west coasts of Florida, the Washington area, in Philadelphia and North Jersey, and more recently on Cape Cod. Arid a note from Spook Conway says a Cleveland-Toledo- Detroit affair is in the works.
Your class officers and a few members of the executive committee met in Hanover in late April and chose John Corwith to be class president until our 1992 Reunion. At the same time we all sat in on the Class Officers Weekend ceremony at which AdWinship was named Class President of the Year. Kiki was there to accept the award. Those of us who have worked closely with Ad since the 1988 45th Reunion know how well-deserved the award was.
Buzz Cassidy, in letting me know that he would be on hand for the executive committee meeting in April, added that he and Kathie planned a leisurely May trip down the Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway, through the Great Smoky National Park and on to an Elderhostel program at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. Then in June Buzz was to have had an overhaul of his right hip.
Sid Bull, in a great report on the Florida East Coast reunion in March, added the tale of Joe Lopez-Silvero, who did attend. Joe left Havana when Castro took over, fled with $5 in his pocket and then ended up with a bad work experience and super inflation in Argentina. Sid said that Joe was totally relaxed at the Jupiter reunion and had a great time. "A great prospect for the the 50th" Sid wrote.
Unable to make the East Coast meeting were Dick Rughaase (poor health), JimMulligan (recovering from a stomach operation Ben Page called from Houston with the news that Jim was recovering nicely), Bucky Strader, and Ed Finn (both still working) and Dick Deverian.
Sid added that Dale Bartholomew, a winter resident in Stuart, Fla., survived an infected gall bladder operation in February. He's fine now according to Sid.
And, finally, an excellent report from 50th Reunion Chairman Dave Heald on the fine 12-man turnout in Yarmouthport (on the Cape) in May. Leo Caproni and Art Henderson masterminded the get-together.
Be on the lookout for mail from BobSearles with details of the 1990 fall mini- reunion in Hanover on October 12-14. It's the Yale game and a whole lot more. Put these dates on your calendar now and plan to join the large crowd of '42s (over 75 in 1989) who will be there.
Many friends of the late Ad Winship, including members of his own and other Dartmouth classes, have made contributions to a memorial fund which will honor Ad's life-long contributions to his alma mater. An appropriate memorial will be determined by the officers of the class of 1942 in consultation with Ad's widow, Kiki. Contributions may be sent to the Addison L. Winship Fund in care of the Development Office in Hanover.
