THE SPIRIT OF '42
"Slim, curly-headed, 22-year-old GeorgeRounds Jr. came out of the hip-deep mud of Northern New Georgia today with the first eye-witness account of the American's hazardous and difficult but successful fighting trek from Rice Anchorage to Dragon's Peninsula A month ago Rounds asked for assignment with the troops detailed to land at Rice Anchorage in the Central Solomons invasion He said he was bored by the routine bombing strikes at Munda and wanted to learn about ground fighting."—An AP dispatch from Guadalcanal, July 12.
"Here is another Solomons Story, a little late, but culled from an eye-witness of the landings on Vella Lavella Young Lt. (jg) Oliver Quayle, a Gunnery Officer of the ship that is unnamed, was knocked galley-west when a Jap bomb came close. .... Quayle picked himself up, shook his head, laughed, and said it reminded him of the first time he tried skiing at Dartmouth."—Claude Mahoney, Commentator, Station WMAL, August 19.
"I am going to storm that damn town. They (the Germans in Sicily) can't do that to us."—Lt. James Fowler, Life, August 9.
And brethren, if I only knew about half the rest of such incidents that '42 is involved in at the present time, I wouldn't ever have to worry about filling this column.
