This will be short, mostly because I'm flat on my back with some Oriental disease, common to nurses, children, and pregnant women. I can't even pronounce it, much less spell it. Recovery appears imminent, and having suddenly reached the rank of Captain, you can also count on an invasion being imminent.
Got a censored letter from Lt. John Cutler, overseas for almost three years now with the Marines in Seacoast Group "A" of a defense battalion.
Lieut. John Emerson is at State College, Miss., instructing in Army Administration OCS. His letter is too long to quote, but it's good. For part of it, "Washburn has taken the plunge, and is now married to a gal from Jersey. That makes three kegs of beer he owes Feakins and me. Big Ed White is now in the Navy, having deserted Mrs. White and the child for the briny deep. I guess news of the war finally reached Portland and the Hood Co. The last I heard, Cheese Hull had been commissioned in Tank Destroyers, but that news source has dried up lately."
Ensign John Nassikas is on duty at the Aviation Supply Office at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Reports he and wife Veena doing well. Says Walt Halfman was married in April, Ensign Tom Roberts working on photography, and Bob Osterhout as a public relations expert with Reading Railroad.
Ensign Ed Hibler has deserted the Bristol (Conn.) Bank & Trust, wife, son Cliff, 5½. and daughter Carol Lee, 2½ for the Navy. He's now at Harvard for five months, for indoctrination and communications. Dick Farrington is still accounting for DuPont in Wilmington, Hank McDuff is at the Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, Ham Mitchell is in advertising with Donnelley Corp. in Chicago, Chuck Oliver is at the Haynes Memorial Hospital in Brighton, Mass., Stew Whitman is tax accounting for American Bridge in Pittsburgh, and Tom Chapman and Jack Graham are hammering out the tools of war—Tom at Bethlehem-Hingham Ship Yard in Hingham, Mass., and Jack with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in Hartford.
MEMORIAL FUND
1938 has received its first gift to the 1938 Memorial Fund.... five shares of preferred stock from George Dana. Not being a member of the stock exchange, I've first got to check with my lawyers on the legality of further information. So we're off to a good start.
Now for our romance, which never seems to diminish, thank heavens. March 27 was the date for Marjorie Hill (Dana Hall and Katy Gibbs) and Lieut. Len Gutner. They're in the Army now, after Len's graduation in March from N.Y.U. Med. Lieut, (jg) Ev Wood is apparently back in this country, now doing patrol and convoy missions in Navy Air.
Lieut. Dorothy Batt ANC and Lieut. Dick Rooker, Med. Corps are engaged. She's at Ft. Meade, and he at Camp Gordon. Ensign Dan Quilty of the Boston Navy Yard contingent and Elizabeth Tyson were married March 26. She was Dan's secretary when he was ass't. superintendent of Pennsylvania Woven Wire. Ted Hunter and Marjorie King of Montclair, Wheaton, and Smith Architecture are engaged. Did you know that Ted designed the Toll House at Stowe and the Hans Thorner House at Franconia? I guess that's something that goes with an architect's profession after the Harvard School of Design. Jughead Thomas, now a Ist lieut. and Ist pilot on the B-17 "T'aint a Bird" Flying Fortress, has hit the overseas road.
And that's the hot stuff for this month. By the time our next issue comes out, I'll probably be able to report our new class officers, and in the meantime, I refer you to the Pace-Setter for news, and the PaceSetter to you for your Fund dues.
