WITHIN THE PAST two weeks I have had the pleasure o£ two visits with Dartmouth friends, home on furlough after several months at sea. Brian Phillips '47 came to see me at the office, looking very fine and fit in the uniform of a midshipman of the U. S. Maritime Service. After one summer term as a Dartmouth freshman he entered the training school for cadets of the Merchant Marine on Long Island. For the last seven months, still as a member of the school, he has been sailing both Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. He likes the sailor's life, but is eager to get back to Dartmouth before too long and finish his course.
The other visit was over the telephone with Lt. Bob Ekin '37, USN, back from many months of service in the New Hebrides and other parts of the Pacific. It was good to hear his familiar voice in hearty greeting, and I was sorry that his leave was too short for a real reunion. He wanted to know more than I could tell him of the doings and where- abouts of some of his old chums, including Charlie Keyes '38 and Carl (Mutt) Ray '37.
