On stationery of the Bromley Mountain Ski Club, Inc., Johnny Seesaw's, Peru, Vt„ Major Jack Hubbell some time ago composed this gem: "I'm here on a retreat from the hurly-burly of Washington and N. Y. What a spot this is—particularly in early October! You asked for news. One item comes to mind fast, the arrival of Susan on August 25—our third. That gives
us a round quarter-dozen, with Johnny, aged 7, and Jeannie aged I haven't seen many of the '2l gang for a long stretch. That includes Washington and N. Y. where I spend most of my time, and a quickie trip to California a few weeks ago. As you know, Ort and I are in virtual partnership, and are working together on the same identical Army problems. I'd be in Hanover on this trip if it weren't for the gasoline situation. If I could coast all the way both ways, Hanover would be a cinch. Best regards, JACK."
This department has become accustomed to shocks, so we weren't feazed a bit when a week before Christmas what appeared to be another greeting card arrived, which upon inspection turned out to be an engraved announcement of the marriage on November 25 of Elena C. DePhilippis and Mr. Lincoln H. Weld. Now, Mr. Weld, if you will sit down in your new home at 2 Grace Court in Brooklyn and write a lucid explanation of this, in your usual faultless prose, all will be well Rufus (Bud) Reichart has gone off the deep end. Announcements only recently have gone forth of his marriage on November 14, 1942, at Aberdeen, Md., to Rhoda, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Johnson. At that time Bud was stationed at the Aberdeen Proving Ground—present whereabouts not a matter of record and probably a military secret.
Paul (Doc) Rosenthal, erstwhile Wall Streeter, turns up a lieutenant in the U. S. Coast Guard. A nice letter would be much appreciated, Doc! .... And Capt. George (also y-clept "Doc") Beaudoux AUS reports he's holding forth at 406 South 8th St., Rocky Ford, Colo And still farther west is Lt. Jim Wicker USNR hibernating at 555 Santa Rosa Ave., Berkeley 6, Calif Major Ed Luedke AUS goes in for Christmas greetings with a bang. While he was dispatching a snazzy, extra superdooper "Jingle Bells" greeting via V-Mail to the Class of 1921, Hanover, N. H., from his African Field Headquarters, Molly and little Ann gave out with a slightly more conventional, though nonetheless artistic, greeting card addressed in the direction of this operative from the "farm" in Atlantic Highlands, N. J Recent Washington visitors included Bob Wilson, onetime WPB neighbor of ours but now back in private enterprise. Bob looked prosperous and summed up everything by saying he was very happy in his job; the company's doing a big war business with V. P., Wilson concentrating his energies on post-war products and developments Recent Washington arrivals include Lee (Dutch) Bausher, the Reading, Pa., textile magnate, who's contributing two days a week of his time to Textile, Clothing and Leather Goods Division, Knit Goods Branch, of WPB. Dutch and your agent met by fortuitous chance in the building which houses both our Divisions, just before presstime for this issue, so complete details are as yet unavailable.
Speaking of bumping into Dutch brings to mind the announcement that your agent once again has a new office address. This time it's 2319 Temporary "D" Bldg., 6th and Independence Ave., S. W., Washington. Telephone is unchanged, REpublic 7500, Ext. 74235 Capt. Newel Smith AC postcards from Wright Field: "I'm one of a group sent here to the Materiel Command because of our business background. I have been assigned to the general procurement branch. Maybe you don't know that everything peculiar to the Air Forcesis bought through Wright Field. Quite a job. Hoped I might get sent to Los Angeles district but this looks as permanent, for here, as anything in the Army is. Saw Rynie Rothschild late last spring looking just aswell as ever. Believe he's overseas now. Saw Vose and Hayes '22 in Oklahoma City and Rog Harris '24 in Dallas, but these '21 boys seem to be scarce. DeWitt Mallary's law partner is at the Field and I see him now and again. Best, Smitty.... "Rockets Come of Age," authored by Harland Manchester, appeared in The American Mercury for December With the paper situation becoming increasingly serious, the pressure is on to hold class noteswithin established space limits. With scads ofletters going "on ice," this column signs off for February.
