As the temperature drops to twenty-below outside, I write quickly in anticipation of being able to use all the letters and clippings I've received this last month for fuel to warm up the apartment. It's been a cold and fairly snow-less winter so far. But there has been a stream of visitors that provided fun and merriment. Lee and Toni Horschman came up from Macon, Ga., for a weekend in early January. After hours of pleading, they finally showed me pictures of little Eric that they happened to have with them. Lee. who is with Kodak, has slowed down quite a bit in his old age, as he called it a night at 11:00 on Saturday. And, speaking of slowing down, Tom Wahman was here for five or six days and he tried playing hockey. While still a tiger at heart, Wahms has lost a step or two. Al and Betsy Stowe were up from Virginia Law School for a few days. They set up headquarters down in Woodstock and threw a little tails party one night after skiing. Al sees lots of '60's down there and they've seen fit to have a party or two.
Jon Richardson, from out San Francisco way, sends news of Dartmouth '60 - West Coast Edition, with particular reference to those commanding ships on the high seas. Tom Hannan and Rick Roesch are both on ships out of San Francisco and have been seen in some of the better bars in the Lake Tahoe region. Gary and Mary Kanady are in San Diego where Gary is with a submarine unit. The Kanadys were married a year ago New Year's but through an oversight in my staff, this was never reported. Bill Mullin, Hans Wurster, and Jay Crane are all stationed out that way too, but no specifics on them. Jack Nunn is planning to retire from the Navy this June. Jon himself has been roaming the Pacific as a Disbursing Officer aboard the USS Coral Sea since last February. He's slated for a year of shore duty in San Francisco this July. He expects to retire from public service on approximately January 8, 1963.
Other West Coast news tells of the big S.F. Dartmouth Christmas meeting. WesRoodhouse, Bruce Hasenkamp, Dick Gale and Jim Nolan were among those attending. Wes and Bruce are still at Stanford, Dick is at Southern Pacific, and as far as I know, Jim is draft-dodging.
Word from Bob Colyer at Wesleyan is that he is teaching and going to school down there. Bob Irvine is doing the same. ConnerMorse is at Cornell Med in New York. DickGoodman, after a year at University of California, is now with Uncle Sam at Fort Dix.
From our European division: Bruce Henry is a math teaching assistant at the University of Paris. He will be getting his Ph.D. there in 1963. Dave Hodson is with the Army in Hohenfels, Germany and has indicated that he would like to see any '60's passing through the area.
Now for a few marriages: Last August 5, Dave Hambleton and Dorothy Matsis were married in Nashua, N. H. They are now living in New York while Dave is at Columbia Law. Neil Grey was married to Joan Spirn on December 24. Neil is now attending the University's Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. Ned Nabers and Lynn Kalb got married over Christmas vacation. Ned is going to Princeton Grad School, in archaeology, I think. Bill McClung and Susan Stearns tied the knot on December 16, in Woodstock, Vt. Bill is serving aboard the USS Severn in Newport. Bob Becker and Ann Monro were also married on December 16, in Winchester, Mass. And, lastly, Roger McCoy married Marisa Gori on December 23 in Boston. Rog is now at Yale School of Art and Architecture.
Hap Dunning writes that he and DaveMosteller are struggling through Harvard Law. Hap has an apartment with Dave Robinson, '59, and Joel Alvord who is with the Army at the Boston Ordinance Office.
Somebody must have been having a good time out at Aspen over New Year's. I received a postcard telling of the great skiing and having postage of one cent due on it. The rather scribbled card, mailed sometime on New Year's Eve, said that Lecky Young,Jack Hodgson, Tom Grow, Dan Daniels, and Jack Patterson were all enjoying lots of snow and Coors.
Art and Diane Balser, who are now living in Danvers, Mass., had a son - Dana Scott — on November 11. I think that's their second, but I'm not sure. Some of the rest of you married men must be handing out cigars. How about sending me one along with some pertinent data.
Ryan Ostebo is back in the country from Okinawa to play for the U.S. hockey team. He was up here last weekend and got engaged to Gretchen Funkhouser of Hanover. His vacation will be short-lived, though, as he must go back to Okinawa this spring.
And, that will do it for another month.
