American forces isolated in the Aleutians are under the impression that a tree is a phenomenon peculiar to the United States, according to Major Jacques Franchine '37 USAAF, who recently returned to the United States after a six months' "exile" in the Aleutians. The rocky islands can boast only one tree, which was imported by an Army Transport pilot, and is appropriately labeled "Aleutian National Forest."

Major Franchine received the DFC and became a charter member of the "I Bombed Japan" Club. He was one of the first to take off from an American land base and bomb Japanese mainland soil.
