AGAINST THE UNUSUAL background of several years of battle with the notorious Hague machine in New Jersey, Prof. Dayton McKean writes College Men in Politics, our lead article, starting on Page 9. The urgent need and growing, opportunity for college-trained men in government service is his interesting theme.

Prof. Bancroft H. Brown, director of V-12 mathematics and one of the College's most prodigious workers, again turns his hand to writing, which he does wittily, in Naval Mathematics, the second in our series of brief descriptions of the large basic courses in the Navy program. It starts on Page 13. The fiftieth anniversary of Richard Hovey's writing of the words for Dartmouth's alma mater song is marked by Prof. Allan Macdonald's Men ofDartmouth on Page 11. Prof. Leon Burr Richardson's series on the names of College buildings this month presents the fascinating story of the Sanborn family in his article SanbornEnglish House, starting on Page 15. A tribute to Louis Henry Dow, late Tuck Professor of French, Emeritus, has been written by Prof. Prescott Orde Skinner and will be found on Page 19.
