Through the alertness and kindness of J. W. Newton '86, who is ever interested in Dartmouth Alumni, I received, under date of April 27, 1944, two days before he was to leave Florida—where he spent two weeks in a hospital, on account of nervous exhaustion—for his home in Newton Center, Mass., the following bit of surprising news to me:—
"Meeting a man at the University Club the other day, who has a summer home in Vineyard Haven, Mass., I asked him if he knew an elderly lawyer there by the name of Brown and he said he did but thought he had passed away last Fall. I then wrote a friend in St. Petersburg who confirmed the fact but could not give particulars as she had read of his death in the Vineyard Gazette after she had left for the South. She added, however, that Brown had been in poor health for some time and about a year before his death had married a Mrs. Tilton.
"Upon receipt of this advice, I immediately wrote Brown a letter at his home address, as if I understood that he was still one of the survivors of our class, although I had been unable to entice him to engage in any correspondence with me or give me any information whatever concerning himself since the 45th year Reunion of our class, which he attended, and received a reply from Mrs. Tilton, a long-time companion, stating that Mr. Brown died last December of pneumonia, but gave me no particulars."
If I can get the necessary data, I will furnish a proper obituary for the next issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE.
J. Leslie Woodfall, president of our class, has not been in good health the past year. He writes me that a short time before Christmas he suffered an attack of pneumonia which necessitated hospitalization for seven weeks. He says that the doctor did not expect him to recover, but he finally did and is now taking it easy. He has three grandchildren in the armed service of our country.
The secretary of the class has practically recovered from his automobile accident of last March and is now quite well except from occasional attacks of sinusitis.
Charles W. Hamilton has a new address, which is 3049 North Lake Drive, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
