John Meleney, son of Councilman and Mrs. Clarence C. Meleney of White Plains, N. Y., as top man of his class of 667 in the Midshipmen's School at Columbia University was presented with a gold watch at a regimental review on South Field on August 20. Given in the name of the University's president, the watch is the Columbia Award "for scholastic excellence." Ensign Meleney now has gone to Hollywood, Florida, for additional training. Jack was married in January to Lillian Rokme of Columbia, S. C.

Dorothy Elizabeth Kilbourn, sixteen years old, daughter of Albert and Jessie Kilbourn, died on July 25 at Holland, Mich. For five years an incurable disease has been progressing silently, but she had enjoyed life during this time. An unusually gifted musician, she played the piano, th& French horn and the violin. She was preparing for Grinnel College. The sympathy of the class goes to her parents and three sisters.

George Knight, on August 6, was appointed to the position of Superintendent of Agencies of the United Shoe Machinery Cos. This means administration over a force of approximately 1500 people located in about fifty cities from coast to coast.

Harry Hillman's death on August 9 at Dick's House in Hanover was a sad blow to the College and class. Harry has been an honorary member of the class since our third reunion, for he entered Hanover as track coach with us as freshmen. He was stricken with coronary thrombosis on August 7. Marc Wright and Jake Enright were two members of his first Olympic track team. Harry himself was a triple Olympian.

Lt. Comdr. Marc Wright was in town for a lunch just after a bunch of us had said "goodbye" to Lt. Cmdr. Carl Shumway on July 12, at lunch at Pattens' and Mrs. Francis Shumway was with us. Carl was headed for the Aleutians, but as this was before the Japs gave in on August 14 we have yet to hear how far beyond 'Frisco he landed.

Alvin H. Dessau has been appointed to the advertising sales staff of Red Book Magazine with headquarters in New York. He returned to Look Magazine when he recently finished serving 21/2 years in the U.S.N.R. as lieutenant commander.

Bill Towler spent some time at the Roose velt Hospital in New York, after losing his appendix on July 12. He returned to the office in time to get the two-day holiday in August. Flowers went from the class which Bill says "were unnecessary but greatly appreciated," when he wrote from Spring Lake Beach, N. J., where he was recuperating.

Katherine Ann, daughter of Joe and Mrs. Barnett was married to Capt. Wm. James O'Brien, Air Corps, Army of the United States on Saturday, July 14 at Glencoe, Ill.

In trying to locate Bill Baldwin we ran into some information that may mean a good story later. The Town Clerk at Goshen, N. H., says Bill left to go to Jaffrey, N. H., to live in an old C.C.C. Camp and from there "to Alaska where he would find more to do with his team of sled dogs."

On May 25 Harry Semmes sent us a pictorial review of the IV Corps in combat. Under the brilliant leadership of his C.0., Major General Willis D. Crittenberger, the IV Corps broke many records of performances for the U. S. Army—for example, "we captured over a dozen generals in one day." He hoped at that time to see us before the end of the year, but that was May and although the big map did not arrive until August, no word has come from the Colonel since then and now V-J day should bring more information—providing he has any orders yet. Later—he has orders and Harry and Nita Semmes with their second son "Roc" just back from Germany were in Boston just as this goes to press. We had dinner at the Copley Plaza and they were on their way to Hanover, where Harry Jr. has returned to finish his education. Harry Jr., you will remember, was decorated with the D.S.C. at Saipan. The Colonel is now on his way out and will take over the affairs of the class as its president.

FISH TAKE WARNING. These three Isaak Waltons are from left to right, Dutch Barends 'l3, Bill Apple- yard 'l4 and Bill Towler 'l3. They are shown at Dutch's fishing camp 100 miles north of Ottawa, Canada.
