Five '28ers have been awarded Bronze Stars I have learned by studying the returns from a questionnaire sent to our men in uniform last August.
Pfc. Mac McCoy received his Bronze Star "for heroic achievement on 10 December 1944," according to the official citation. Mac's account is more detailed than the citation, so I'll quote hisjetter "The 90th Division (3rd Army) had made a crossing of the Saar River and my regiment, the 358 th Infantry, was engaged in taking the city of Dillingen. It was mostly house-to-house fighting and we also had a number of pill boxes to blow.
"I was an automatic rifleman and over night my squad was on outpost, located in a house considerably in advance of the rest of the company. The enemy infiltrated about dawn and cut us off. After calling on us to surrender they attacked the house with infantry, which we beat off. They brought up a tank and attacked again. We beat this one off also, the tank fortunately receiving a direct hit from one of our Sherman tanks which had been hidden around a corner quite a ways down the avenue.
"We rejoined our company later when they attacked and cleaned out the Jerries behind us. The five remaining members of the squad all received the Bronze Star. Nothing particularly heroic, but rather rough while it lasted."
Mac also wears a Presidential Unit Citation ribbon which was awarded to the Third Battalion of the 358 th Infantry for an action known as Foret de Mon Castre, or to the G.Ias Hill 122.
S/Sgt. Scotty MacLeod received the Bronze Star, but so far I haven't been able to get a copy of the citation.
The three other Bronze Stars were awarded to Lanky Langdell, Barney Nova and Curly Prosser, all lieutenant colonels, for meritorious service overseas. Lanky arrived back in the States August 6 and is now stationed at the East Coast Processing Center, Camp Edwards, Mass. I enjoyed a nice visit with him on his recent trip to Washington.
Barney Nova was discharged September 12 and is practicing law in New York.

Tax is returning to his position as professor of zoology at Dartmouth and owner of the largest mint bed in Hanover.
