Another of our classmates has left us; Willard J. McLaughlin died in his sleep at his home in Lacey, Wash., on February 3. "Give a rouse" for Everett "Dutch" Learned, recently elected to the Aula Laudis Society by the American Chemical Society in recognition of excellence in the teaching of chemistry at the secondary level and for his contribution to chemistry education. The society is the "hall of fame" for high school chemistry teachers. Dutch's career includes some 40 years of teaching at Norwood High School, where he has been chairman of the Science Department from 1933 to his retirement. Also included was government service, church, and other local activities too numerous to describe.

Fran Peabody, widow of Mill, keeps busy; a family wedding in Dallas, a Smith reunion in April, as well as workshops where she has to speak in Newport, R.I., and Madison, Wis. She also keeps in touch with families and people living with AIDS, involving trips to parts of Maine. She was awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters from Bowdoin last May. The reunion count is still increasing; it looks like a total of 60 or more for June 8-11. Harry White is still hanging in there in spite of having to use two canes to get around. Bunny Levison attended the Dartmouth Club of Florida luncheon recently and saw Elly Wallis Chick, and BobWeinig was also there. The speaker was the new director of athletics.

Molly Bates underwent an emergency retina operation in October, which broke up her golf game, but she now has her old energy back. She was in Houston with her son Ben '71 and grandson Marshall for the holidays. Ben and Johanna left Marshall with her in the fall for a trip through New Hampshire Molly helped raise $1,500 for Open Table at the Concord Country Club.

Thought for the month: Laziness is merely a habit of resting before you get tired.
