Because of the request of that classmate, who has always been our leader, both in college days and after, the secretary has submitted this snap shot for publication.
It represents him attired in the buff beaver hat, coat, waistcoat, and stock, worn by his father, on his honeymoon, ninety-eight years ago. He was at that time serving the first of two terms in the National House of Representatives from New Hampshire. Serving in the House at this time were two men who became presidents of the United States, Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. No one even guessed their destiny then. Daniel Webster and Jefferson Davis were members of the United States Senate.
"Our Dan" writes that he does not envy the job of a secretary. He avers that he does not possess the required imagination. Imagination! What a secretary needs is FACTS! If classmates will not reply to letters, it is difficult to secure news. But if the secretary could use his imagination it would be a picnic.
Just as a sample we could write: Judge Bingham has announced he will be a candidate for the United States Senate, opposing Senator Bridges; "Postle" Morse has accepted an invitation to become dean of the National Cathedral at Washington, D. C.; "Doc" Sanborn has become chairman of the Organization of Chemical Warfare. It is rumored that Fred A. Howland will be nominated by the President, as Ambassador to the Court of St. James, succeeding Mr. Winant; Corwin has been chosen as President of the General Theological Seminary, New York City; Doc Brackett has been asked to become the Dean of the Sheffield Scientific School, Yale University. So we might cause a considerable sensation. One thing we all know, that each of these classmates is well suited for these imaginary jobs.
In a letter to a classmate the secretary told how he was enjoying his breakfast served in bed while visiting friends near New York City. His home duties do not allow these luxuries, but he likes them. So the classmate replied congratulating him on "rising from a sick bed!" From a remote quarter then came another letter, wherein another classmate congratulated him on his "release from a hospital." So stories grow. As a matter of fact the secretary has not been ill, and is enjoying the best of health!
"Sonny" Gage is in Florida at St. Petersburg, and later Doc Sanborn expects to spend a few weeks at Ormand beach.
The secretary, at the time of his. and his mate's golden wedding anniversary, received many very heart-warming letters, for which, although undeserved, he is very grateful.
