A BEQUEST OF ANTIQUE furnishings and paintings has been received by the College's Department of Art and Archaeology from the estate of the late Willis Earle '89 of New York City and Thetford, Vt.
The three most interesting items in the bequest are a Sheraton sofa with a long history of association with the College, a landscape painting in oil by Joe Jefferson, famous American actor, and an oil painting by the American artist, John Henry Dolph. The sofa is known to have been owned by the first Bishop of the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of New Hampshire, Carlton Chase, 1817. It was brought to Hanover by Charles F. Chase '85 as part of his student furniture and, after his graduation, went to his younger brother, Arthur Chase '89. From Arthur Chase it passed to his roommate, Willis Earle '89, who willed it to the College. The sofa has been placed in the Carpenter Art Galleries.
A mahogany secretary and other oils, watercolors and prints were included in the bequest.
The College has also been left a bequest of $5,000 by the late John A. Munroe, retired vice president of the Union Pacific Railroad, who died in October in California. Mr. Munroe was a member of the class of 1875.
