A breath of battle gentled by the distance, Trembled in a blade of grass Where clung an ant with strange persistence.

A weary soldier lounging near Advised the ant to lose his fear, To loose his grip And softly slip Into the moss that lay below.

Then with a grin's stiff upper lip He left the ant—to meet the foe.
