Hanover in May seven years ago seems far away, far away in terms of battle, because the campaign then current was to beat the Phi Gam Softball team. You know the Phi Psi team was in foul shape then, because I even played in the outfield one day. I quit after X caught the only ball that was hit in my direction, and I thought at the time that Hanover in the Spring was the best place I knew. I still do, and so do you, and even though it's unwise to be too optimistic about our present campaigns, it begins to look as if the time is not too far distant when we can see Hanover in the Spring again. When we do I think I'll weasel myself into a ball game again.

Bunky Dunlap passes on a lot of conversa tion. From Herb Christiansen:

"After spending a year in England and France, I returned during the latter part of November. Since then have been in Washington, California, and now back in Washington, D. C. Am with OSS." From Dr. Hanks McDuff: "Since finishing my interneship at the Rhode Island Hospital, I've been assistant resident and now resident surgeon at the Providence Lying-in. I expect to go into the Army the first of July and I hope to drive to Carlisle for my first assignment. I don't know my complete plans yet, but I think Charlotte and Diana (now 17 months) will be with me for those six weeks." From Archibald: "I had two beautiful months with my wife during which we saw the Mays' and Soules' in New York, the Davises and MacKinnons' in Chicago, Muff Davis and Borneman in Pasadena. Have been out about 15 months hitting all the bases in the South Pacific and believe you me I'm ready for seeing the good spouse back in the JJ. S. A." From Dave Hosmer:

"We are quite isolated from the rest of the Army where we are, so have seen few Americans, much less a Dartmouth man. Had a weekend in London, but found it much like it was in peacetime and had my usual luck in failing to meet anyone I knew, so told big lies to strangers. Annie reports my son tipped 20 pounds, with a 28-inch height at six months. Has a fine head of hair." (Which is a very unusual thing in the Hosmer family).

From Bob Foley in the ETO:

My army career has been a varied one. As you probably know, I spent one too-short year in Hanover at the Clinic before the Army decided to cut short my civilian hospital training. Leaving Betty in the East, I was sent to the wilds of Texas and stationed at Ft. Bliss for six months. Then I came back East and made the Eastern tour of all the anti-aircraft camps before leaving for overseas in July. At present I'm on the surgical staff of a general hospital. My status is still uncertain, but I expect Pacific theater duty before too many months. Betty, and daughter Susan (one and one-half years) are living in Massachusetts. Received a letter from Ons Gordon, and he was assigned to a medical clearing company attached to the Infantry in Germany.

From Jack Donovan (Maxwell Field, Ala.):

Have been here for over a month now. Hated to leave St. Louis. Heard via the grapevine that Mays is about to get a little sea duty after holding down a desk in New York. I don't know how true it is but I think the sea air would do him a, lot of good. Reno seems to be having his usual social luck. No hits, no runs, and lots of errors.

From some news clippings:

Robert Isaac Owen USMCR recently was promoted to captain at his base in the Pacific and given command of a line company of the First Marine Division. He served at Peleliu as CO of a rifle platoon. From Sandy Mills:

Emlen and I had one dandy reunion. In Harris- burg, Pa., the boy-wonder (even against Gus Zitrides in the ring) is still smooth as ever, though I do believe his bird-dog instincts have vanished somewhat. As for me, another offspring is the order of the day. Day after Valentine's Day, a baby boy, Charlton Mills. I left Peyton in Texas.

Bill Collins received a battlefield promotion from first lieutenant to captain. Bill has been overseas a year with the 3rd Army. Wounded in August he wears the Purple Heart. His Bronze Star citation reads, "for meritorious service in connection with military operations against our: enemy in France, Luxembourg and Belgium. As CO of a tank company, his sound tactical employment, aggressive leadership, skillful planning, and disregard for his own safety were to a large measure responsible for the successes scored by his company." Cpl. Bob Feineman was in on the landings in the Philippines. ,

Promotions: 2nd Lt. Bill Simmons, Lts. (jg) Bill Bartlett and Lloyd Krum, Major George Waterbury, Lt. Comdr. George Buck, Ens. John Mercer. Harry Connors is an instructor at Marine Staff and Command School at Quantico. Capt. Johnny Whelden, on 30-day leave after 27 months overseas, was married February 24 to Edith Manley Irwin, of West Hartford, Conn. Lt. Before the Navy, Fran was a law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Stanley Qua of Massachusetts, and later was with Gaston, Snow, Rice and Boyd in Boston. Lt. Rog Baker at the Naval Air Station, Tillamook, Ore., reports a male addition to the Baker family, born February 25. I report an addition to the von P family, too. The roach in my foot locker has seven little ones (light tan).
