April 1944 CAPT. CARL F. VON PECHMANN, ENS. J. CLARKE MATTIMORE

Phil Beatman was commissioned a captain a few months ago, and commanded a Coast Artillery battery at Salisbury, Mass. On January 23 he was due to marry Helen Olson of Newburyport, Mass. A couple hours before the wedding, he phoned her from Boston, bought some flowers, and has been missing since. Authorities believe that he was either the victim of foul play, or may be suffering amnesia. To date I haven't heard anything about the case, except for the initial newspaper articles.

Florida still remains the same, the Lord's gift to the Seminoles. To top off that mental hazard, my wife has gotten to be a (jg). That other (jg), Howie Rea, was married January 23 to Elizabeth Drayton, Washington, D. C„ and Smith, (jg) Bill Clarke, now stationed at Key West, was married January 20 to Louise Moeri, the Miami typhoon. Dave Berliner has been in the southwest Pacific, and he's a (jg) now, too. Lt. J. Clarke Mattimore and Hannibal Coons are co-authors of "The Fighting Funnies" in the January 29 issue of Colliers.. Sandy Mills is at Ft. Sumner, N. M., an air base for advanced pilots, but as Sandy says, "I'm still in the M.P. and chasing hostile prisoners." That I want to see.

Bob Holdom was killed in action. See the Necrology section for details.

Warren Flynn's sister let go with the following, "Knowing that Warren has been kept on the go, I thought I'd write the latest we know of him. Believe the last news in the MAGAZINE about him was that he was at Pearl Harbor on the Maryland on that terrible day. He was assigned to the Maryland until October, 1942 when he was sent to Baltimore for five months. Then he left there on a tanker and was in the south Pacific until August 1943. While in Baltimore he got his promotion to full lieutenant. He flew home from the coast the end of August and after two weeks here he went to a Naval Air Base at Dallas. He was at the base until the middle of December when he got orders to return to sea duty. While at Dallas he ran into Bob Egelhoff, Tom McGrath, and Henry Beck. While Warren was in Texas he said he had a letter from Howie Rea, and Howie had seen quite some excitement at Salerno on the destroyer to which he's attached."

And that, little chickens, is the news for this month. Dick Francis says he doesn't miss Cochituate. Does anyone ever hear from Calder or McMurtrie?
