A second monthly luncheon of '07 men in and near Boston was held at the Downtown Club, Parker House, on April 7. Attending classmates were Pierce, Plummer, Niles, Macdonald, Stevens, Woodworth, Crocker, Cushman, Smart and Lane. These enjoyable gatherings are to be continued and will usually be held on the last Wednesday of each month. Cordial invitations are extended to classmates visiting Boston from any part of the country, and particularly to New England men who visit Boston more or less frequently.
After an absence from Boston of eight years, Albert E. Stevens has returned. Having spent most of his life in the retail field, following his return to Boston Steve entered the wholesale cotton dress business, with which he continues to be connected. Two years ago, however, he obtained a leave of absence from his company and joined the OPA as Shoe Rationing Officer for New England.
John B. Churchill '44 has been reported missing in action over Germany since April 8, 1945. John, son of Perley W. Churchill '07, left college in March 1943 to enlist in the Army Air Corps. He was later commissioned as second lieutenant and was pilot of a P-40 plane.
Roger W. Herrick, son of Ralph C. Herrick 'O7, who died in 1926, was killed in action in Northern Italy on February 4, 1945. The class is grieved by both these losses.
Herb Hinman, our engineering classmate connected with the Virginia Engineering Co., Newport News, Va., reports that his company's war service has been recognized by three Army-Navy "E" Awards.
An up-to-date report on Jim O'Neill's family indicates an unusual record of service. (1) Patricia, wife of Jim's son, Captain John, who died on Bougainville, is completing a nine months job on Guadalcanal for the Red Cross. (2) Jamie is in the Army Air Force at Camp Marana, Arizona. (3) Margaret is stationed at the Cable News Desk, OWI, Honolulu. Her fiance, Capt. David Kelleher, USMCR, Harvard '4.1, was killed in action ofE Tinian in July 1944. (4) Hugh, a Chinese speaking cavalryman, is in India. (5) Richard is with the Infantry in France. (6) Paul is in the Navy and stationed at Sampson, N. Y. (7) Edith, Jim's wife, has gone back to teaching mathematics in the James Madison High School in Brooklyn until the regular mathematics teachers return from war service.
Advice has just been received that Pfc. Lewis Sibley was killed in action in Germany on March 24. He was the son of Homer Sibley '07, whose home is in Newport, N. H. Lewis entered service in October, 1943, and went overseas in October, 1944. He was graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1943 and had attended Harvard for three months before entering service. He was attached to the 18th Infantry, First Division of Gen. Hodges' Ist Army. During the German counter-attack in Belgium last December Lewis was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge. The sympathy of his classmates has been extended to the parents.
