August 1945 HENRY H. AUSTIN

There were but four of the ten living graduates of the class of '85 present for the sixtieth anniversary of our graduation: Briggs, Brooks, Whipple and Austin. Briggs was accompanied by his son, Paul B. Briggs '11, his wife, and daughters Janice and Muriel, Whipple was accompanied by his nephew, William Caldwell '16, and Austin by Mrs. Austin and their granddaughter Judith Austin. Mrs. Otis E. Hovey and her granddaughter, Ellen Davis, who were temporarily at the Hovey home in Hartford, Vt., were present at the informal class dinner at the' Inn on Friday evening, June 22.

Reports were read from every living member, including a card from Joseph W. Shultz who was with us during our freshman year, now living in Topeka, Kansas. It was also learned that Olin D. Sturges, of Sacramento, Calif., who also was with us during our freshman year, had died several months ago.

Charles F. Chase retired from the presidency of the Berlin Construction Company June 6, 1945, and was elected honorary chairman of the board. He has been affiliated with the company for forty-five years, serving as president the past twenty years.

Dr. Edwin H. Allen has become a poultry man on a large scale at his summer home in Linwood, Mass. In a letter dated June 12, he wrote that he had hatched some 2500 chicks and contributed some 25,000 eggs to the market since January 1. He promises to save the life of any '85 man who faces death by starvation.

Austin's grandson has been discharged from the Army, after serving in Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany. He plans to return to the U.N.H. to complete his course, which was interrupted at the close of his junior year by his induction into the Army.

The newly elected class officers are Alton F. Briggs, President, Henry H. Austin, Secretary and Treasurer, John P. Brooks, Class Agent.

Your new secretary takes up his work with profound realization of the difficulty he faces in following the steps of two great secretaries, Herbert Foster and Edwin Bayley. He will do the best he can, but he must have the willing help of the remaining members of the class. If you would like to read about the other men send in something about yourself and let them read about you and yours.

Secretary and Treasurer, Warner, N. H.
