Dr. John Brooks reports that he and his wife spent an enjoyable summer at their home in Potsdam, New York, having their daughter, Elizabeth, and Mrs. Brooks' sister with them. John is an ardent golfer and on account of his prowess was selected to take part in an interclub match at Brockville, Ont. He conserved gasoline enough to take a business trip to South Eliot, Maine, in September and on the way called on Mrs. Otis Hovey at Hartford, Vermont, and stopped over night at the Hanover Inn, but the stay on the Maine coast was all too short to suit him. He and his wife are planning to make their usual winter sojourn at the Hollywood Hotel in Southern Pines, North Carolina. He expressed his great satisfaction over the results of the November elections, as well as the United Nations' successes on the African front, both of which find strong responses from very many of us.
Al Briggs wrote pleading no personal news for himself, but contributing the. interesting information that his nephew, Andrew M. Wood, Dartmouth '42, the son of Theodore N. Wood '01, received the distinction of being awarded a prize of $500 offered to a graduate of any New England College for the best theme on some Constitutional subject; his very inspiring and timely subject was "A More Perfect Union." The Awarding Board of three judges was made up of department heads from Yale University, Princeton College and the University of Vermont. Cordial congratulations to the young graduate.
Lorrain Weeks writes, "It occurs to me that we old fellows might be able to furnish reminiscences when unable to supply news items," which might prove a good suggestion for those who have sufficient and discriminating courage—let someone make the beginning.
Henry Austin, in his faithful monthly report to the Secretary, writes that he and Mrs. Austin arrived at St. Petersburg on October 13th by train which was only their second trip by that means of transportation during their twenty annual pilgrimages to sunny Florida. As a Florida voter, he admits being very much surprised when he looked over his ballot to find noRepublican candidate for office upon it. This may furnish food for thought in these days when we hear so much of liberty, "our American way of life," and "equal rights."
