Problem Committee
October 1946

IN AN EFFORT to meet and solve the problems posed by the record fall enrollment of 2900 students, many with families, President Dickey recently appointed Sidney C. Hayward '26, Secretary of the College, head of a combined College-community committee designed to deal exclusively with this question.

Representatives from 35 College and community organizations, from the Chamber of Commerce to the Hanover Chapter of the AVC, were asked to participate in the committee's work. Wherever possible students were given representation on the committee.

Six sub-committees were set up under the general chairmanship of Mr. Hayward, and Charles F. Camp '42, assistant to the Dean, was named secretary. Robert DeO. McLaughry '44, president of Green Key, Howard D. Samuel '46, editor of The Dartmouth, Archie B. Gile '17, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce's fact-finding committee, Mrs. Elizabeth W. Hayward, manager of the Dartmouth Dining Association, Lloyd K. Neidlinger '23, Dean of the College, Warner Bentley, director of COSO, Richard W. Olmsted '32, assistant superintendent of buildings and grounds, Prof. John P. Amsden '20, president of the Mary Hitchcock Hospital, and William H. McCarter '19, director of athletics, were named as heads of the sub-committees.

After several meetings, extensive surveys of the College and the community were made to determine what local services would be in shortest supply. Following tabulation of the results a form letter was sent to all students expected to return to Hanover for the fall term outlining in detail the local situation.
