The resignations of Donald L. Kreider, vice president and dean of student affairs, and Carroll W. Brewster, dean of the College, were announced last month.
Kreider, first incumbent of a position created in September 1972, at the advent of year-round operation and coeducation, will relinquish his administrative duties September 1, one year short of his fouryear appointment, to return full-time to teaching and research in mathematics.
Franklin Smallwood '51, Orvil E. Dryfoos Professor of Public Affairs and chairman of the Urban and Regional Studies Program, will be acting vice president and dean of student affairs for the academic year 1975-76.
Brewster, dean of the College since 1969, will leave Dartmouth at the end of June to become president of Hollins College in Roanoke, Virginia. A graduate of Yale and Yale Law School, he was serving as U.S. Commissioner, teaching at the Yale Law School, and practicing law in New Haven when he was appointed to replace Dean Thaddeus Seymour.
A specialist in computer science and former chairman of the mathematics department, Kreider has continued to carry a half-time teaching load while administerring the diverse areas of student affairs, including the libraries, the Tucker Foundation, the Kiewit Computation Center, financial aid, outdoor affairs, student health, and counseling services.
Smallwood returned to Dartmouth in 1957 as executive assistant to President Dickey and joined the faculty in 1960. He has served as acting dean of the faculty of arts and sciences in 1972, as chairman of the social sciences division and associate dean of the faculty from 1968 to 1970, and for several years as director of the Public Affairs Center.
