We have all sung the lines "Loyal Men of Dartmouth" and "The Granite of New Hampshire remains part of them 'til death." No better proof of their truth may be found than the following incident which occurred in Joe Bartlett's office a couple of months ago.

A contractor was consulting Joe on a legal matter and the fact came out that the contractor had been engaged in construction work on the Alaskan Highway. Joe asked him if he had met Fulton Lewis up there, or Colonel Wyman. The man replied that he had not and then was asked whether he had met Bill Hewes. Again the man replied that he had not and Joe told him he knew Bill had been connected with the construction of this highway and had been up there on the job. After a moment's thought the contractor said that he did not know any Bill Hewes but had met a Dr. Hewes on the work. This made Joe think he was on the right track and he told the visitor that he might know him as Dr. Hewes but we all knew him as Bill Hewes, and he was a classmate at Dartmouth. This was enough to warm up the visiting contractor, who then told Joe that one day while on the job Dr. Hewes came up to him and asked him if he was a Jew. He replied that he was not, that he was a Syrian. Bill then asked him to name some place in Syria, which he did. Bill then told him he knew all about Syria as his wife had been born there and had written several books about the country. Upon inquiry the man told Bill he had two daughters and one son. Asked what the son did the man told Bill the son was a student in Dartmouth College. Bill then immediately dropped all talk about Syria and from then on all talks had with this man were concerning Dartmouth. Bill Hewes is ever a "Loyal Son of Dartmouth."
