Chosen as one of a group of thirty outstanding college graduates, Matthew E. Gately III '45 has recently completed his seven-months internship in the National Institute of Public Affairs, his intern assignment being in the Information Section, Office of American Republic Affairs, Department of State.
Requiring high standards of scholarship, character and leadership, and selecting its students on a competitive basis, the National Institute begins its program with orientation meetings on the operation of the Federal Government. Each student is then assigned, according to his interests, to special work in legislative or executive offices of the Federal Government, on a full-time non-salaried basis, in such branches as the Senate Special Committee on Atomic Energy, the study of LatinAmerican relations in the State Department, personnel and budgeting experience in the National Housing Agency.
Gately in addition to his every-day practical experience was free to participate in weekly discussions with topranking administrators, diplomats and journalists. He graduated from Dartmouth summa cum laude, was a History major with distinction, a Rufus Choate Scholar, and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He plans to attend Harvard Law School.
