APRIL is a cruel month for poets - and it can be a bit trying for North Country athletes, too. The weather this year has been lousy, as it usually is for much of April, but the teams so far are winning more than their fair share of contests.
By mid-month the Dartmouth teams were long since back from southern vacation trips. League competition was under way, but bad weather still played hob with practice conditions despite the indoor facilities of Leverone Field House.
Baseball and tennis appeared to have the best chances to end the season in championship contention; lacrosse almost certainly would improve on last year's one-win, five-loss league record, and golf had much going for it. For only track and crew - the latter competing for the first time under the auspices of the DCAC — was the season outlook somewhat grim.
Dartmouth also was gaining athletic attention in the club, or self-supporting, sports of rugby, sailing, and canoe competition.
Meanwhile, Hanover sports observers patiently hoped for spring weather to arrive so they could get a first-hand look at all this spring athletic prowess. Sport by sport, the picture was this:
