Hayt's eyes aren't usable long at a time,- but he still writes his beautiful script; ears pretty good; neuritis keeps him awake at night, but he pulls weeds by day, eats what he likes, and can out-run and out-jump a neighbor afflicted with the same ailment who adheres to a strict diet and consumes nostrums. He would take no alarm if the College should borrow at present low rates enough to meet its present exigency, or should accept a larger student body. He finds delight in the wonderful camelias for which Sacramento is famous and of which it holds an annual show.. ..
Parkhurst is experimenting with a hearingaid, not quite sure whether it aids him. We are all hoping that the Army's new tests for hearing defects will become available for civilian use in our day.... Parkinson has resumed his idle wanderings, sojourning at present with son Herman '13 at White Plains. He finds on his cherished Quaker Calendar for February a quotation from Cowper that seems to apply:
"An idler is a watch that lacks both hands, "As useless when it goes as when it stands."
By the way, are you interested in the agitation for a new World Calendar in connection with UNO? Speaking of memorials with which this MAGAZINE scintillates, it cannot have escaped your attention that while those striking pictures on the front cover change from month to month, the one betokening undying loyalty, and no less striking, is to Lord Calvert on the back cover. What service has he rendered to the war to overrule the protest that several years ago brought about the exclusion from the MAGAZINE pages of all invitations to strong drink?
