DARTMOUTH ALUMNI will receive with regret the news of the recent deaths of three well-known Hanover figures: Hugh McLaughlin, athletic trainer for the Dartmouth College Athletic Council for the past 25 years, who died on February 13; Dr. A. R. Fogg, Hanover dentist for 33 years, on March 4; and Bill O'Neill, head janitor of the gym and field house, in Dick's House on March 7.
Hugh McLaughlin came to Hanover in 1920, and would have been 65 years old on March 27. As trainer he was a great favorite in the locker room. During the football and basketball seasons, "Hughie" accompanied the teams on their trips and these occasions were highlights to him each year. He will be missed by the many Dartmouth athletes who came to know him during his years of cheerful and conscientious service, which seemed easy and unobstrusive.
Bill O'Neill, who for 33 years was a campus personality, was known by students as the man who hired and fired ushers and ticket takers at football games and took care of the visiting teams when they came to Hanover. He began his work with the College as janitor of Middle Mass and three years later was made head janitor of the Gym. He lived in a two-room apartment in the Davis Field House, where he came to know as an expert the abilities, moods, and personalities of Dartmouth athletes—and no one was more concerned with their successes or failures than Bill O'Neill.
Besides his deep interest in his profession Dr. Fogg had an active interest in Hanover affairs. He was president of the New Hampshire Dental Society for several years and for nine years was a member of the Hanover School Board. His greatest wish was to establish a Free Dental Clinic for children in Hanover, and a fund for this has been started by his friends.
