Elect Douglas Captain
August 1946

William H. McCarter '19, Director of Athletics, has announced that a recent decision by the Athletic Council will permit Thomas H. Douglas Jr. '44 to captain the 1946 Dartmouth football eleven.

Elected to lead the 1943 Indians, Tommy left college to join the Naval Air Force in the winter of 1942 and thus was deprived of his opportunity to captain the Big Green.

Douglas broke into the lineup in 1941 as a sophomore when he became starting fullback at the end of his first season of play. In 1942 he started every game and attained national prominence as a punter with a 41.2 average that placed him fourth in the nation. Hanover football fans still recall a punt made by Douglas as a freshman against Holy Cross on Memorial Field when Douglas kicked 85 yards on the fly. In 1941 Douglas was credited with an 80-yard kick against Yale in the Bowl.

The 1946 football captain prepared for Dartmouth at Loyola Academy and his home is Chicago, Ill. He was a member of the second Dartmouth Naval Air Unit and flew dive bombers in Pacific combat.
