Mike Remlinger '88, who led the Big Green to the 1987 Eastern Intercollegiate Baseball League pennant and pitched a 4-0 shutout against ninth-ranked Michigan, is making headway in the San Francisco Giants organization after leaving Dartmouth following his junior year.

Drafted in the first round last spring, he pitched in a rookie instructional league. The Giants quickly promoted him to Class A Clinton, lowa, where he stayed for a month before being called up to the Class AA team in Shreveport, Louisiana. There he compiled a 4-2 worksheet, with an earned-run average of 2.50.

"Obviously I want to get into the majors as soon as possible," Remlinger says, "but I also want to play well and be more consistent." He has averaged about 85-88 miles per hour with his fast ball of late, "topping out at 90 a couple of times," he adds. Batters beware: he is also working on a split-fingered fastball for his pitching portfolio.

Remlinger reported to the Giants' major league camp in Scottsdale, Arizona, on February 21, and started working with Manager Roger Craig and the coaches of the 1987 National League West Division champions. Remlinger's performance in this camp will help determine where he starts the '88 season.

Whether he spends the summer in Clinton, Shreveport, Class AAA Phoenix, or San Francisco, he still has his eye on getting his Dartmouth diploma. He is just two terms away. "I really don't know when I'll graduate. But it's always nice to be back at Dartmouth," confides Remlinger, who took classes during winter term. "It's a good change of pace."
