Friday evening before the West Point game, Army Coach Earl Red Blaik was on a live television program with Edward R. Murrow from Blaik's home at West Point. Red spoke nostalgically of his years as Dartmouth coach and of his association with President Hopkins and so many fine Dartmouth players. But sentiment has no part in a football game and Blaik's Army team showed polish and precision in their game with the Big Green. For 42 minutes of the game, the Indians turned in a superlative defensive performance, holding the powerful Cadet team scoreless. No one had any idea that Dartmouth, which reached only as far as the Army 37-yard line throughout the entire game, would win, but the stubborn Big Green defense looked awfully good for almost three periods. Then Dartmouth fumbled on its own 30-yard line and Army took over. Pete Vann, Army quarterback who had been a menace to Dartmouth the previous year, tossed a pass to halfback Bob Mischak and Army had a touchdown. Later, in the fourth quarter, Vann hit end Dan Holleder for another score and then pitched to Mischak for the third tally. Army's fourth touchdown came in the dying movements of the game when Paul Lasley, a reserve halfback, intercepted a Dartmouth desperation pass and went forty yards for the final score. The Army defense was just as good as Dartmouth's (better in fact). The Indians gained only 81 yards on the ground against 231 for the Cadets, while Dartmouth quarterback Bill Beagle could complete only two out of 13 passes for a total of 43 yards. Vann threw for a total gain of 155 yards and three scores and it was Vann's passing that broke the game open and made the difference in the end.
