Seems like Seventeeners took a long vacation this summer. Perhaps some are resting up from that wow of a reunion, and others just holed up for the season. Anyhow, news is very scarce. With the "Woild Serious" out of the way and the football season in full swing, maybe we'll see more of the lads and hear more about their doings. Dish it up, boys, and make it hot.
Speaking of football, our first note of the season is that Bunny and Milly Holden and Spique and Ruby Maclntyre invaded Worcester where their spiritual support helped the Big Green hold the heavily favored Holy Cross to a very acceptable tie.
'17 is helping the team in other ways, too. An item from Hanover announces formation of a football advisory committee to the Athletic Council with Barney Thielscher (than whom could there be a better) as a member.
Undoubtedly as a result of '17's Green Derby record, the College knew where to look for men to put on the newly organized committee to raise funds from non-alumni. The Boston section has Spique Maclntyre, HowieStockwell and Slatz Baxter.
Unfortunately the news is not all good. SamMackillop sends on the following note:
"Thomas Welles, Coventry, Conn., insurance agent, died recently at his home in South Coventry, aged 56. Grandson of Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy under President Lincoln, and a direct descendant of Thomas Welles, fourth Governor of Connecticut, he was active in the business and civic life of Coventry for 30 years. At the time of his death he was chairman of the Democratic town committee.
"He leaves his wife, Ruth Welles, a son, Thomas G. Welles and two daughters."
Sumner Emerson reports that he had anice chat with Joe Whit on. She has beenearning on Yes's insurance business in Brooklyn since he passed away last fall.
Nemo Streeter for the second time won theMaritime Seniors Golf Association Championship, played at Digby, Nova Scotia, with 78 and 86, total 164 for the 36 holes.
Reports come from Hanover that the Harold Holt family and the Bill Allisons' were at Hanover during September.
The Boston Herald of September 20, reports as follows:
Wellesley Hills, Mass. Sept. 15— Announcement is made of the marriage, Sept. 12, at the Unitarian Church, of Miss Ann Frances Gerrish, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Otis Gerrish, of Wellesley Hills, to Mr. John Winthrop Gordon, son of Air. and Mrs. Colin John Gordon, of Bay Head, N. J., and Bahama Beach, Fla. Mrs. Gordon attended Kent Place School, Summit, N. J., and Pembroke College. Mr. Gordon attended Lawrenceville School, was graduated from Brown University, '45, and is a member of Zeta Psi. After a trip to Bermuda, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon will live in Framingham.
Doc Walters and son Waltman, flew to London in September, where Doc attended the Internatonal Society of Surgery meeting in London and the meeting of the French Congress of Surgery in Paris. We do not know how long Doc plans to stay over there but look forward to receiving his idea of conditions in England and France when he returns.
Ed Dewey is still keeping up to his record as he is mentioned prominently in the September Country Gentlemen in the article entitled, "Predicting Things to Come." Ed seems to have established quite a reputation and we are all very proud of him.
Don Brooks and son Bill were in Hanover the latter part of September, as young Bill enters this term. Don reports the usual good time with Arch and Mary Gile. The news reaches us from Boston that the Stockwells intend to visit the Towlers at Darien, the weekend of the Yale game.
Among those present at the "Dartmouth Night" celebration at the New York Club were: Seventeeners Ten Shea, George Currier, Eddie Earle, Cliff O'Neil and Don Brooks. After this meeting was over, the afore-men-tioned gentlemen held a special Seventeen conclave and thought it would be a fine thing for all Seventeeners who attend the Columbia-Dartmouth game, to drop in at the Club after the game. It will be just an impromptu get-together meeting and if it can possibly be arranged plan to drop in for a few minutes of conviviality.
Just a word to all Seven teeners who aregoing to the Yale game: At our last class meeting in Hanover, we decided to present Bob and Anita Scott with a remembrance from the class. Your committee has arranged for a suitable remembrance and it is hoped that there will be a big. turnout at Bob and Anita's when the presentation is made.
