Henry B. "Doc" Wood, for 20 years a member of the College's buildings and grounds department, died October 9 at the home of his sister, Mrs. Allen Abbott of Dover Point, N. H. He was 86 years old.
Known to hundreds of Dartmouth men as "Doc," Mr. Wood was appointed janitor at the gymnasium in 1914. He later became head janitor and at the time of his retirement in 1934 was primarily concerned with maintenance of the College grounds.
The Rt. Rev. John T. Dallas, Episcopal Bishop of New Hampshire, who knew Mr. Wood in Hanover, officiated at the funeral services held in Portsmouth. Several officers of the College attended. Burial was in Auburn, N. H.
Upon learning of Mr. Wood's death, Willard M. Gooding '11, Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds, said:
"A dozen years ago a faithful servant left the employ of Dartmouth College. The campus little noted 'Doc's' departure, but some there were who remembered—here a bush, there a treepersonally planted and nurtured by him. He loved Dartmouth like a son and started for her benefit a college nursery.
"His real humility and his absolute integrity need no greater mention than the living elms back of Fayerweather Row of which he was very proud. Those who knew him best are glad that in his trees and shrubs his soul goes marching on."
