MOUNTAIN CLIMBING GUIDE TO THE GRAND TETONS,
November 1947 Henry Coulter '43, NATHANIEL L. GOODRICH

& Merrill F. McLane '42. Vermont PrintingCo. 1947, pp. 67, $2.00.

This is very much a Dartmouth production. Coulter and McLane revived the Dartmouth Mountaineering Club after its suspension during the war. Coulter still has a term to go for his degree. McLane last year was Assistant Manager of the Dartmouth Outing Club and has just left for Europe to study at the University of Geneva. Stanley Rice '45 did the attractive woodcut on the title-page, and various members of the faculty assisted with advice. This is a guide for serious climbers rather than tourists, but not for the elite group of expert rock climbers. The advice given seems to me sound and on the conservative side. The essential question about any climbing guide is, is it reliable? Knowing the editors, I feel sure that it is. I climbed the Grand Teton by one of the routes described and it checks with my recollection. Altogether

it seems to me a very satisfactory job, and one which reflects credit both on the editors and on the Dartmouth Mountaineering Club. I have noticed two or three minor infelicities, and doubtless those who have climbed much in that splendid range will find points to correct. Presumably at some later time either another edition of this guide, or one compiled by other editors, will include climbing routes which at present the editors have deliberately omitted, and give even fuller details of the routes they have described. Meanwhile this should serve excellently as a handbook for the rapidly increasing group of those who enjoy the sport of mountaineering.
